Game Thread: Marlins vs. Guardians, 6/8 @ 7:35 pm ET
Ely Sussman replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk

Welcome to FOF's 64th Miami Marlins game thread of the 2024 season. There is a Puerto Rican heritage celebration being held, which has drawn a larger-than-usual crowd to loanDepot park. Otto Lopez (paternity list) and Tim Anderson (bereavement list) remain away from the club, allowing Xavier Edwards to make another start at shortstop. This game is being nationally televised on FOX (no Bally Sports Florida coverage). The roof at loanDepot park is closed. SuperSubs can access exclusive game notes here. Pregame roster moves: RHP Roddery Muñoz recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville; LHP Ryan Weathers (left index finger strain) placed on the 15-day injured list. Enjoy live on-site coverage from Kevin Barral.

Mack should stick at catcher. Only DH-ing so much because Pensacola still wants to give reps to both McIntosh and Hostetler. Not an indictment of Mack, just a consequence of the roster construction.

Anderson's perspective is still valued in the clubhouse. He's the most experienced player on the roster following García's departure. His playing time should be reduced a lot from what it has been and I'd be disappointed in the team if that doesn't happen, but it'd be an overcorrection to let kids run the clubhouse entirely.

Prospect review-fallers (Warning: depressing)
Ely Sussman replied to Chad Turner's topic in Marlins Minor League Talk
I was low on Berry entering the season, but still couldn't have envisioned his season going this poorly. Just missed about 2 weeks with a minor injury. Whatever that was, I'll cut him some slack and assume it was contributing to his severe struggles. Even if he gets back to being the player we saw at Double-A last season, he doesn't profile as anything more than a replacement level big leaguer. -

Your hunch was accurate: Edwards has been called up, with Lopez (paternity) and Anderson (bereavement) both being unavailable this weekend.
-
Edwards is 8th on our own list. Others that exclude him must be considering him ineligible due to days spent on the active roster. Lopez at this point has spent even more time on the active roster. I see them as similarly valuable overall. Would put Edwards slightly ahead of Lopez.
-
Yes, already more reps than he had last season. Arm strength remains an issue, but he looks somewhat competent there overall.

On Thursday down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville got swept in their doubleheader, losing 3-2 and 14-9. Great individual effort from OF Griffin Conine, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three walks. JT Chargois threw another scoreless inning in what figures to be his seventh and final rehab appearance. He'll rejoin the Marlins bullpen in the coming days. LHP Kent Emanuel posted one of the ugliest final lines you'll ever see (2.0 IP, 12 H, 12 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 71 pitches/39 strikes). Double-A Pensacola won, 4-3. C Joe Mack (FOF #25 prospect) hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning and also caught two runners attempting to steal. He also homered on Wednesday. The youngest player to suit up for the Blue Wahoos this season, Mack has a 125 wRC+ at the Double-A level as a 21-year-old. High-A Beloit split their doubleheader, losing 4-0 and winning 8-5. Low-A Jupiter lost, 1-0. RHP Eliazar Dishmey (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 68 pitches/47 strikes) was terrific. C Ryan Ignoffo extended his hitting streak to 11 games. FCL Marlins won, 5-4, despite committing five errors in the contest. DSL Marlins won, 4-3. LHP Abraham Hernández went four no-hit innings in his professional debut. I found that eyebrow-raising as well. They're too stubborn to pull the plug on Anderson at this stage, so don't get your hopes up about that. Would have to be something else.
-
Any way you slice it, their trade assets are inferior to the previous rebuild. That being said, Luzardo is still very valuable. The last outing was among the worst of his career, an anomaly that wrecks his current season stats, but has negligible impact on the overall assessment. Sandy has the potential to be their top asset in this process.

Rays continue Citrus Series dominance, sweep Marlins
Ely Sussman replied to Nate Karzmer's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Several of us had the same objection last night while watching the game. All players on the roster ought to get some usage, especially in situations that play to their strengths. But even with the platoon advantage, Rivera is not a threat to blast a home run. Would've much rather seen Sánchez hit instead for the reasons you cited. -
On Wednesday, "Bad Boys" stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence took over loanDepot park. Handicapped by poor outfield defense, Braxton Garrett immediately put the Marlins in a 3-0 hole. Miami's bullpen threw up zeroes in relief of him, but it ultimately didn't matter. The Marlins lost, 5-3. Terrific offensive showings from Brandon Lowe, Isaac Paredes and Randy Arozarena in particular. Incomprehensibly, Tampa Bay has won 23 of 26 games against the Marlins dating back to 2019. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 2-1. INF Xavier Edwards (FOF #8 prospect) went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, raising his batting average to .365. In what figures to be his penultimate rehab appearance, JT Chargois threw a 1-2-3 inning. Double-A Pensacola lost, 14-6. High-A Beloit won, 4-3. OF Jake DeLeo hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the eighth inning. Low-A Jupiter lost, 4-3. LHP Patrick Monteverde (FOF #18) struggled with his control during a rehab start (1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 K, 46 pitches/23 strikes). OF Colby Shade went 3-for-3 with his 20th stolen base. INF Junior Sanchez went 1-for-4 in his first game at the Low-A level. Way back in 2019, he received a $1.15M signing bonus from the Marlins. He played parts of three seasons in the Florida Complex League before finally earning this assignment. FCL Marlins lost, 2-1. OF Dillon Head (FOF #5) and OF Kemp Alderman continued their rehab assignments. DSL Miami won, 2-1. Excellent professional debut for LHP Kifraidy Encarnación (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K). Is that the last we'll see of Avisaíl García in the major leagues?
Ely Sussman posted an article in Marlins
On Tuesday, Jesús Luzardo looked sharp early on, but the wheels fell off during his second and third trips through the Rays lineup. Luzardo allowed a season-high nine hits and a career-high nine runs (all earned). Bryan De La Cruz became the first Marlin this year to tally 10 home runs. Randy Arozarena reached base safely five times. The Marlins lost, 9-5. Down on the farm, Double-A Pensacola lost, 6-3. C Joe Mack scored two of those runs and recorded his team-leading 12th double. Low-A Jupiter lost, 3-0. The Hammerheads only had 28 plate appearances (one above the minimum). FCL Marlins won, 8-2. OF Dillon Head (adductor strain) homered and played six innings in center field to begin a rehab assignment. DSL Marlins won, 7-1. Standout performances by INF Rafael Castillo (3-for-3, BB, SB) and RHP Oswaldo Aponte (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K). DSL Miami lost, 7-4. OF Luis Cova had an RBI double and a sac fly. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 The Marlins have cut Avisaíl García with more than $24M still remaining on his $53M. García had been finishing rehab from his latest hamstring injury when they designated him for assignment, preferring to allocate playing time to younger alternatives rather than one who's been significantly below replacement level during his Miami tenure. The Venezuelan outfielder posted a pathetic 61 wRC+ in parts of three seasons. To address the question in the article title, I will guess that García eventually receives another cup of coffee in the majors. However, that's contingent on him being able to stomach an extended Triple-A stint with whichever organization picks him up next. 🔷 DFA'd by the Fish last week, reliever Woo-Suk Go predictably cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville. 🔷 Jeff Passan's early MLB trade deadline preview reports that the Marlins are "expected to move" at least one starting pitcher this summer, whether that be Luzardo or somebody else. Predictably, Passan describes Tanner Scott as "gone for sure," though he also places Josh Bell in that same bucket. While Bell has been considerably better after an awful April, his 2024 production still lacks the kind of over-the-fence power teams covet from a first baseman/designated hitter. He's also drawing walks at the lowest rate of his career and leading MLB with 11 double plays grounded into. Seems optimistic to be so confident that there will be market for his services. 🔷 In our first Swimming Upstream prospect interview of the season, Jakob Marsee joined the show from Pensacola. In 24 games since being traded to the Marlins organization, Marsee is slashing .214/.371/.381 (135 wRC+) with just as many walks as strikeouts (19 apiece) and eight stolen bases. 🔷 Nate Karzmer explains how Jesús Sánchez's luck has turned around after having very little to show for his hard-hit balls through the first two months of the season. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, five players were suspended for violating Major League Baseball's sports betting rules, with infielder Tucupita Marcano receiving a lifetime ban. Astros RHP Cristian Javier will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2024 season and sidelining him for the majority of 2025 as well. The Cubs erased a 5-0 deficit to beat the White Sox, who've now lost 12 games in a row. Former Marlin Brian Anderson signed a major league deal with the Braves. Bench players in Atlanta notoriously receive limited playing time, but in the aftermath of Ronald Acuña Jr.'s season-ending injury and considering that Austin Riley is playing far below his usual standards, Anderson could occasionally sneak into the lineup at right field and third base. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Braxton Garrett) host the Rays (RHP Zach Eflin). It will be Eflin's 19th career appearance vs. Miami, more than he has against any other MLB team. The Marlins have a 46.8% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 6:40 p.m. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Charlotee, 6:35 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Mississippi, 7:05 p.m. ET High-A Beloit vs. Lake County, 7:35 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Lakeland, 6:30 p.m. ET FCL Marlins at FCL Nationals, 12:00 p.m. ET DSL Miami at DSL Astros Orange, 11:00 a.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes- 1 comment
