Bendix could prove to be the savviest decision-maker in baseball and it still wouldn't be enough to overcome complacent ownership. That is the lingering concern. There is no glory in having the second-worst record in the league following draft lottery reform. That was not part of the long-term vision. Sherman is responsible for the magnitude of the team's dramatic regression. Even though Bendix publicly claims otherwise, he did not have the support to sign accomplished veterans on short-term deals to plug roster holes, the kind of players who would have raised the team's floor and at least turned into potential trade deadline assets had the team collectively struggled. If Sherman did not have the willingness to enhance this roster with his WBC revenue, large year-to-year attendance increase and still-intact local TV deal, what reason is there to believe that things will be different on the other side of this rebuild? His cheapness will continue to limit what they can realistically achieve.

JJ Bleday was a leading AFL MVP contender the season prior to Marsee. To Marsee's credit, though, he was 1.5 years younger at the time of his performance.

Ranger Suarez (starting tonight) happens to be an excellent fielder, so you'll have to wait at least one more day to see that again. Brujan and Gordon simply don't get down the line as quickly as Jazz does. Jazz is the only player on the roster who'd I consider to be a plus runner by MLB standards...that is, until Xavier Edwards comes back from injury. Then you'll get a steadier supply of bunts.

Marlins news roundup for 5/9/24 On Wednesday, Ryan Weathers looked great against the Dodgers, particularly in terms of fastball command. Unfortunately, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Teoscar Hernández lofted a middle-middle changeup just out of the reach of Nick Gordon for a game-deciding two-run home run. Miami's only run production came on Bryan De La Cruz's eighth homer of the season. In his first series back from injury, Jake Burger went 1-for-12 with an infield single and five strikeouts. The Marlins lost, 3-1. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 6-5. OF Victor Mesa Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the 10th inning, his sixth dinger of the season. Double-A Pensacola won, 5-1. New acquisitions OF Jakob Marsee and 1B Nathan Martorella combined to reach base safely seven times. RHP Anderson Pilar has quietly thrown 14 ⅔ scoreless innings in his first season with the Miami organization. High-A Beloit swept a doubleheader, 3-2 and 3-1. Good starts from both RHP Jacob Miller (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 94 pitches/66 strikes) and LHP Emmett Olson (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 95 pitches/68 strikes). Low-A Jupiter won, 3-2. C Ryan Ignoffo (1-for-4, 2 RBI) continues to be one of the Hammerheads' only bright spot offensively. Each of the previous two times, it took roughly one month from suffering the injury for him to stretch out as a starter again. Cabrera set a career high with 99 ⅔ MLB innings pitched in 2023, but he won't be able to significantly build upon that following this latest setback. Old friend Jorge Soler landed on the IL with a right shoulder strain. Pregame roster moves: LHP Braxton Garrett (left shoulder impingement) returned from rehab and reinstated from the 15-day IL; RHP Edward Cabrera (right shoulder impingement) placed on the 15-day IL. And now there is yet another physical issue to contend with. Just placed back on the IL with the same shoulder injury he had during spring training. It's been an unpopular stance, but I have completely lost patience with him. Would have liked to trade him during the offseason.

Marlins news roundup for 5/8/24 On Tuesday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a leadoff home run, but Edward Cabrera immediately relinquished the Marlins' lead. Albeit in a low-leverage situation, Tanner Scott struck out the side while showing some of his best velocity of the season (four fastballs at 98 mph). The Marlins lost, 8-2. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 8-6. Huascar Brazoban (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 41 pitches/24 strikes) made his 2024 MiLB debut and looked close to his normal self, averaging 95 mph on his fastball and getting several whiffs on his changeup. INF/OF Javier Sanoja went 4-for-5 with two doubles. Double-A Pensacola lost, 2-0.
