  4. Turner went on the IL and will miss the series! Still time to make a change if you'd like...
  5. Welcome to FOF's 40th Miami Marlins game thread of the 2024 season. Trevor Rogers seeks his first major league win in 382 days. The loanDepot park roof is closed. Everybody can access game notes here (though they are typically exclusive for SuperSubs). Pregame roster moves: none. Enjoy live on-site coverage from Alex Krutchik and Isaac Azout.
  6. Bendix could prove to be the savviest decision-maker in baseball and it still wouldn't be enough to overcome complacent ownership. That is the lingering concern. There is no glory in having the second-worst record in the league following draft lottery reform. That was not part of the long-term vision. Sherman is responsible for the magnitude of the team's dramatic regression. Even though Bendix publicly claims otherwise, he did not have the support to sign accomplished veterans on short-term deals to plug roster holes, the kind of players who would have raised the team's floor and at least turned into potential trade deadline assets had the team collectively struggled. If Sherman did not have the willingness to enhance this roster with his WBC revenue, large year-to-year attendance increase and still-intact local TV deal, what reason is there to believe that things will be different on the other side of this rebuild? His cheapness will continue to limit what they can realistically achieve.

  9. JJ Bleday was a leading AFL MVP contender the season prior to Marsee. To Marsee's credit, though, he was 1.5 years younger at the time of his performance.
  10. Ranger Suarez (starting tonight) happens to be an excellent fielder, so you'll have to wait at least one more day to see that again. Brujan and Gordon simply don't get down the line as quickly as Jazz does. Jazz is the only player on the roster who'd I consider to be a plus runner by MLB standards...that is, until Xavier Edwards comes back from injury. Then you'll get a steadier supply of bunts.
  11. Marlins news roundup for 5/9/24 On Wednesday, Ryan Weathers looked great against the Dodgers, particularly in terms of fastball command. Unfortunately, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Teoscar Hernández lofted a middle-middle changeup just out of the reach of Nick Gordon for a game-deciding two-run home run. Miami's only run production came on Bryan De La Cruz's eighth homer of the season. In his first series back from injury, Jake Burger went 1-for-12 with an infield single and five strikeouts. The Marlins lost, 3-1. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 6-5. OF Victor Mesa Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the 10th inning, his sixth dinger of the season. Double-A Pensacola won, 5-1. New acquisitions OF Jakob Marsee and 1B Nathan Martorella combined to reach base safely seven times. RHP Anderson Pilar has quietly thrown 14 ⅔ scoreless innings in his first season with the Miami organization. High-A Beloit swept a doubleheader, 3-2 and 3-1. Good starts from both RHP Jacob Miller (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 94 pitches/66 strikes) and LHP Emmett Olson (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 95 pitches/68 strikes). Low-A Jupiter won, 3-2. C Ryan Ignoffo (1-for-4, 2 RBI) continues to be one of the Hammerheads' only bright spot offensively. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 For the third time in less than a full year, Edward Cabrera has been diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement. Each of the previous two times, it took roughly one month from suffering the injury for him to stretch out as a starter again. Cabrera set a career high with 99 ⅔ MLB innings pitched in 2023, but he won't be able to significantly build upon that following this latest setback. It's unclear how the Marlins will fill out their rotation around Jesús Luzardo, Braxton Garrett, Ryan Weathers and Trevor Rogers in the meantime. 🔷 Kevin Barral considers the Cubs a logical trade partner for Tanner Scott and wants to see the Marlins go for quality over quantity in such a deal. 🔷 In case you missed it, browse the updated Fish On First Top 30 rankings. The aforementioned Jacob Miller was our biggest riser since spring training, while DH Jacob Berry dropped the farthest. 🔷 This (pre-trade) Jakob Marsee interview from John Conniff of Mad Friars provides good insight into how our FOF #7 prospect thinks about the game. 🔷 MLB Pipeline shouts out Anthony Maldonado as a "potential future closer." Maldonado still hasn't yielded a run through his first six MLB appearances. 🔷 Former Marlins great Juan Pierre had the honor of banging the drum for the Florida Panthers prior to Wednesday's playoff win. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Pirates announced that baseball's top pitching prospect, Paul Skenes, will make his major league debut on Saturday. Marcell Ozuna's big night (2-for-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI) now gives him 12 home runs and 38 RBI in 2024 (leads the majors in both categories). The Blue Jays snapped the Phillies' 11-game home winning streak. Old friend Jorge Soler landed on the IL with a right shoulder strain. He had gotten off to a mediocre start to his Giants career, slashing .202/.294/.361 (94 wRC+) with five homers in 34 games played, translating to replacement-level value. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Omaha, 7:35 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Birmingham, 7:05 p.m. ET High-A Beloit vs. Peoria, 7:35 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter vs. Palm Beach, 6:30 p.m. ET FCL Marlins vs. FCL Astros, 12:00 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes View full article

  13. The very least I could do!
  14. Welcome to FOF's 39th Miami Marlins game thread of the 2024 season. The streak of 13 straight games without a day off is mercifully coming to an end. SuperSubs can access exclusive game notes here. Pregame roster moves: LHP Braxton Garrett (left shoulder impingement) returned from rehab and reinstated from the 15-day IL; RHP Edward Cabrera (right shoulder impingement) placed on the 15-day IL. Nate Karzmer will be writing the game recap.
  15. And now there is yet another physical issue to contend with. Just placed back on the IL with the same shoulder injury he had during spring training. It's been an unpopular stance, but I have completely lost patience with him. Would have liked to trade him during the offseason.

  18. Marlins news roundup for 5/8/24 On Tuesday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a leadoff home run, but Edward Cabrera immediately relinquished the Marlins' lead. Albeit in a low-leverage situation, Tanner Scott struck out the side while showing some of his best velocity of the season (four fastballs at 98 mph). The Marlins lost, 8-2. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 8-6. Huascar Brazoban (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 41 pitches/24 strikes) made his 2024 MiLB debut and looked close to his normal self, averaging 95 mph on his fastball and getting several whiffs on his changeup. INF/OF Javier Sanoja went 4-for-5 with two doubles. Double-A Pensacola lost, 2-0. Newly acquired prospects OF Jakob Marsee (0-for-3, BB) and 1B/OF Nathan Martorella (1-for-4, 2B) were in the starting lineup. Low-A Jupiter lost, 6-5. A.J. Puk (left shoulder fatigue) made the third—and probably the last—appearance of his rehab assignment. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 Fully mended from forearm and shoulder issues, respectively, Jesús Luzardo and Braxton Garrett are the Marlins' probable starters on Saturday and Sunday, per Skip Schumaker (h/t Christina De Nicola, MLB.com). They'll take over the rotation spots previously occupied by Sixto Sánchez and Roddery Muñoz. That means a projected rotation of Luzardo, Garrett, Cabrera, Ryan Weathers and Trevor Rogers for the near future, with Max Meyer likely next in line for starts. Stay updated on all Marlins injuries here. 🔷 Former Marlins outfielder Monte Harrison has halted his baseball career to...play college football? Turning 29 before the next football season even begins, Harrison will walk on at the University of Arkansas. He played wide receiver in high school and had been committed to go to Nebraska a decade ago had he not pursued baseball instead. Good luck to him! Catching up on the other prospects from the infamous Christian Yelich trade: Lewis Brinson is playing in the Mexican League and Isan Díaz is playing in the Atlantic League, while Jordan Yamamoto is retired and coaching baseball. 🔷 It has gone under the radar that Tim Anderson is performing even worse than he did with the Chicago White Sox in 2023. I took a closer look at why that's the case. Entering today, his wRC+ has dipped to 36. 🔷 Hector Rodriguez's latest MLB Draft profile focuses on Florida State 3B Cam Smith. 🔷 From our forums: @Sean McCormack proposes trades involving Tanner Scott and Anthony Bender, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Bryan De La Cruz and Josh Bell. 🔷 Cody Christie of Twins Daily asks whether Minnesota is now the clear winner of last year's Luis Arraez/Pablo López trade. 🔷 Congrats to Ashlyn and Jake Burger, who are expecting a baby girl this fall (the couple's second child). 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Cubs improved to 7-0 in games started by Shota Imanaga, who leads all qualified MLB starters with a 1.08 ERA. Every NL East team is now .500 or better except for Miami. Willson Contreras of the Cardinals (and my fantasy baseball team) suffered a left forearm fracture when J.D. Martinez inadvertently made contact with him during a swing. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Ryan Weathers) conclude their west coast road trip against the Dodgers (RHP Gavin Stone). The Marlins have a 34.7% chance to win and avoid getting swept. First pitch at 3:10 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Omaha, 1:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Birmingham, 12:05 p.m. ET High-A Beloit vs. Peoria, doubleheader beginning at 12:10 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter vs. Palm Beach, 6:30 p.m. ET FCL Marlins at FCL Astros, 12:00 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes View full article

Pregame roster moves: RHP George Soriano recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville; RHP Roddery Muñoz and RHP Huascar Brazoban optioned to Jacksonville; INF Xavier Edwards (left foot infection) transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL (to open up a 40-man spot for Brazoban). 23. Drafted by the Marlins in 2023 (12th round, $150k signing bonus) October 2025 update: Ekness is one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the Marlins organization, topping out at 101 mph. Used mainly as a starter in college, he's been deployed regularly in high-leverage relief situations since entering the pros. Ekness begins his delivery on the first-base side of the rubber to create a difficult angle for left-handed batters—he strikes them out even more frequently than righties. The tall right-hander complements his heater with a plus sweeper, newly added gyro slider and occasional splitter. He should become a major league reliever before the end of 2026. 24. Drafted by the Marlins in 2023 (fourth round, $460k signing bonus) January 2026 update: Olson's fastball velocity is below average, sitting around 92 mph, but he's able to upset hitters' timing with a low-70s curveball that he consistently lands in the strike zone. The slider is his signature pitch. Currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, Olson hopes to return to game action in August/September 2026. 25. Acquired by the Marlins via trade from the Padres in May 2024 January 2026 update: An extreme pull hitter who impacts the ball at good angles, Martorella has been overmatched when facing upper-level left-handed pitching. He slashed .095/.171/.105 against southpaws in 2025. Although Martorella has previous professional experience in left field, he'd be limited to first base in the majors.
