    A battle between two mid teams? Time to see which team is more mid than the other. Marlins 2-1. MVP: Otto. Let's see if Otto can finally break out of his dry streak.

    Is this finally the time where Kemp Alderman gets called up? They have a very easy move they can make to make this happen: Move William Kempner to the 60-day IL.

    It's things like this that is the reason why I'm glad they didn't trade Sandy. Yes, we could have gotten a good package of prospects for him. Yes, he will walk away in free agency with next to nothing to compensate for it. But letting him stay so that he can break franchise records means so much to the fans. Letting him live out his contract on his own terms means a lot to both the fans and Sandy himself. Personally, I would've been upset if they traded him with 2.1 IP left to go to break the franchise innings pitched record, because that means they value spreadsheets over symbolism. I argue that was the only good move they made during the deadline, was to not trade this guy.

    The thing that confuses me is why they didn't have him work on 1B during his minor league stint. Or why they didn't have him take grounders at 1B this spring. Why now, of all times, did they finally have him work on 1B?

    I'm still shocked they never addressed 3rd Base. I get not shopping for Reid Detmers after the 12-game losing streak, but to spend the entire deadline doing nothing but sell off pieces and play musical chairs with the bullpen? Come on, at least try. There were 3rd Basemen on the market they could've traded for, and if they truly thought 2026 wasn't going to be their year, then at least get a 3rd Base prospect who is a year away from being ready, at a position that's blocked at the MLB level, ready to contribute in 2027. All I saw this deadline were goose eggs. Unacceptable.

    I consider Atlanta the litmus test of how the Marlins team stacks up in the playoff picture. The Marlins have failed that test. This was a winnable series. The Braves are mortal right now. Their hitting isn't clicking, and they are sending some bad pitchers against us. Bryce Elder is throwing 88 mph meatballs while having concerning underlying metrics, and while Grant Holmes is slightly better, his FIP and his underlying metrics also suggest otherwise. These were two pitchers the Marlins needed to beat up. ...And all they did was score 3 runs in 2 games. That's not going to cut it at the playoff level. Maybe they were validated in selling off the way they did. Having Hicks would not have made the difference here.

    I bid farewell to the most overrated prospect in Marlins circles. I wish him luck elsewhere. Maybe he'll find his stroke somewhere else, but it wasn't going to be found here, that's for sure. Even though Jacob Berry clinched a championship for Jacksonville, he provided nothing of value to the major league organization itself. Very disappointing when there have been talented players like Chase DeLauter, Cole Young, Cade Horton, and Zach Neto that have been drafted after him. I'm not even going to go over guys like Nolan McLean, Drake Baldwin, and Roman Anthony, who were drafted in later rounds. With yet another first round bust gone, it's only a matter of time before Noble Meyer is shown the door. And then we can finally close the book on D.J. Svihlik. I'm honest to god shocked that guy kept his job as long as he did with how many first-round busts he fished up.

    yeah at this point i'd rather see Brian Navarreto and his anemic bat behind the plate than see agustin there. seriously gus is not a catcher. i dont know what the front office is smoking.

    I'm looking at the box score and I can't help but notice First 7 innings (Mack): 0 WP The last 2 innings (Gus): 1 WP I couldnt watch the game so I don't know if the pitch was blockable, but it's wild how not even 2 innings and there's already a Wild Pitch.

    I'm stunned they never addressed 3rd Base. They're truly just punting this season. They had an opportunity to one-up the braves, who were losing steam and did nothing at the deadline, and all they did was sold off pieces and played musical chairs with the bullpen. I'm beyond pissed they even entertained the idea of trading Otto Lopez. I would say they are forced to get a 3rd Baseman off of Free Agency, but looking at the list, the only one worth considering is Alec Bohm, and everyone on Planet Earth knows the Dodgers are buying him, even if they don't need him. Aiva Arquette is nowhere close to being MLB-ready, and honestly, neither are the prospects we got for Liam Hicks. So we're stuck without a 3rd Baseman until at least 2028. Legitimately one of the more tepid Trade Deadlines I've seen.

    The Braves are mortal right now. I can see the Marlins sneaking away with a series win. Especially when they are now back to being hot again. 2-1 Marlins. MVP: Joe Mack.

    I want to think this trade is more about clearing the way for Kemp Alderman, who the Marlins can't afford to keep lingering around in AAA for much longer. With Mack behind the plate, and Stowers doing Stowers things while being decent at 1B, there's no real way to get Liam Hicks playing time. That said, I do agree that this is a gamble, with the possible upside of Alderman elevating this team's starved offense, to the possible downside of Alderman not being able to adjust to MLB pitching. I get the skepticism. I'm also afraid of the idea that Alderman could end up being a AAAA guy, which is the fear of relying on your farm system. Also, this does not solve the catching position. If Joe Mack gets a day off, who's getting catcher reps? I certainly hope not Agustin Ramirez. Gus is destined for 1B/DH duties. Regardless, I'm hoping the Marlins came away with a buying move. I can smell blood in the water, with the Braves losing steam, and their GM doing nothing at the deadline. If there's a time to make a move, it's right now. Update: Nothing. It's a soft sell this year. Kind of a lame deadline, honestly.

    The Marlins weren't going to use Braxton Garrett anyway, good on them for finding a trade partner that will actually give him opportunities to play. I'm surprised at the trade return they got for him, because this could've easily been a nothing trade. Garrett had done nothing since 2023, and his underlying numbers were very concerning heading into the deadline. I guess the Cubs are just desperate for healthy pitchers. I'm hoping Bendix swings a buying move at the trade deadline, though. The Marlins are getting hot again, the Braves are losing steam, and Alex Anthopoulos is sitting around twiddling his thumbs at the trade deadline.

    Interesting choices. Both infield prospects are blocked at 2B and SS, though. They do have promise, but their only lanes to playing reps are at 3B, who they will have competition with in Aiva Arquette. I do anticipate the Marlins might swing a buying move, using Starlyn Caba as trade bait due to the logjam up the middle, as his elite defense and range would be wasted at 3B. If not Starlyn Caba, then Brandon Compton, as I do envision cashing out on him before his strikeout rate becomes an unignorable problem.

    If Stowers gets traded, that makes room for Kemp Alderman. Though, ideally, a move like that would best be done in the offseason not to disrupt team chemistry. Losing Liam Hicks already hurts our offense, who needs any extra runs they could muster. It's best they don't exasperate this issue any further by also trading Stowers. I'm not even going to go over the what-ifs of mid-season injuries. Cam Cannarella is good, but we shouldn't rush him to the majors this year to patch together our already shaky offense.

    This might be a season where the Marlins do literally nothing at the trade deadline. Most of what they have is underperforming 1-year vets that won't garner interest, and younger, actually performing players with gobs of years of control. If they didn't have the 12-game losing streak, this would be a prime opportunity to buy. But that 12-game losing skid put a stop to those plans. Since the marlins literally have either 0 trade value, or so much team value it'd be dumb to give it up, with no in-between, the best course is to just do nothing. What is the Marlins upside this year? Make the 3rd Wild Card spot and get absolutely blown out by the Cubs? Best to just do nothing, and make improvements over the offseason. The only actually useful trade piece they have is Sandy Alcantara, and they're not willing to trade a franchise icon. Doing so would weaken their already dire starting rotation depth, not to mention deny the fans the opportunity to witness Sandy breaking the Marlins franchise all-time record of Innings Pitched. Bruce Sherman says he isn't going anywhere, and that is ultimately the right call to make.

    You have a premium shortstop who is a terrific hitter, has just enough game power to flip the script, can run the bases well AND steal them, getting into scoring position often, AND is a gold glove candidate. That is a 5-tool player whose potential is realized, and you might even say, he hasn't even reached maximum potential. There's the thought that, one year, he might randomly pop off for 30 HRs. You don't trade a guy like that. You make a 7+ year long-term commitment to him. Not a single Top 5 OVERALL prospect in the entire game is worth this trade for a guy this talented and has this many years of control left. You can't guarantee that the top-5 overall prospects you traded for will put up equal value to Otto Lopez, or surpass him. I'm not even going to go over the No. 2 and No. 4 prospects in Boston's system, who are not Top 5 overall prospects. Even if Aiva Arquette and Cristian Hernandez turn into literal Cooperstown-bound Hall of Famers (which, if you didn't know, ALSO isn't guaranteed), trading him now is still a terrible move.

    the team can keep hitting solo home runs as the only run support all it wants, but if the team is 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, you're not going to win very many close games

    This is a bad idea even if Arquette ends up being an All-Star level SS. You can't guarantee that what you get back from trading Otto Lopez will end up being equal to or better than what Otto Lopez brings to the team. He's young, he's a fantastic hitter, he has enough power to flip a game's script, he can run, and he's a great defender. Any position that has those qualities is a rare commodity. I need to remind you that he's a shortstop, the premier defensive position.

    if we do that then we have literally zero lefty starting rotation depth entering next year. Snelling is TJS and our only other lefty option would be Thomas White and that's even assuming he'll be ready for Spring Training, which isn't guaranteed. Me thinks we cash out on Brandon Compton before his strikeout issues become an unignorable problem later. Also, how much longer are we going to waste the prime of Kemp Alderman by letting him rot in AAA?
