People forget how fast Xavier Edwards is. If there's anyone who could be a league leader, it's probably him. I don't see Jakob Marsee as a contender for stolen base leaderboards. He's fast, and no doubt will collect stolen bases, but I don't think he has Dee Gordon or Jose Reyes instincts on the basepaths. I see him more as a 20/30 guy, maybe 30/30 if he develops power at the plate. Esteury Ruiz does have those aformentioned instincts on the basepaths, but: 1. Will he get enough playtime? 2. Will he gets on base enough? The answer may be no on one or both.

If there's anyone in Spring Training camp that's opening my eyes, it's Matthew Etzel. He's playing his bum out even though there's no snowball's chance he'll be on the Opening Day roster. I love to see the little guys give 110% effort every day during these games. Even if they don't make the roster, they'll make sure the organization remembers their name when someone inevitably goes down to injury. Not bad for someone who came as a return for the Nick Fortes trade. Never thought we'd get much out of trading Fortes in the first place, honestly. Here's to hoping he continues to prove me wrong.

Could Joe Mack force Marlins' hand this spring?
One Regend replied to Louis Addeo-Weiss's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Honestly, at this point, it's not a matter of if Joe Mack will be in the majors in 2026, but a matter of when. They can't keep trudging Agustin Ramirez and his "defense" behind the plate for much longer. And no doubt Joe Mack won't be on the Opening Day roster, as he will likely be held in AAA until late April to manipulate service time clock. My guess is, barring injuries, or massive AAA struggles, we will see Joe Mack around late April or early May.- 3 replies

Joe Mack stars in Marlins spring game

Today has to be a frustrating day if you're Joe Mack. He prides himself on defense, and there's 8 Wild Pitches on the day, 3 of which happened under his watch. But what today does mean is, I now have even more questions about Liam Hicks as a catcher. It's bad enough that he has a bad poptime, something that's already a death sentence for defensive catchers, but if he cant block pitches effectively, he has no business being there. Considering his paltry bat, this isn't good for his outlook. I get some of those Wild Pitches were beyond their control, but this is an extremely discouraging game for guys trying to win the Catcher spot. I would've stomached a 16 run blowout loss if it meant our guys were doing their job defensively, but so far, I have more questions about our catchers than answers.

I have a feeling Snelling might overall win the 5th spot if he performs well in Spring, but would still be in AAA to start the year to delay the service time clock.

Marlins sign Chris Paddack to one-year, $4M deal
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
We're already gambling on Paddack staying healthy in the first place. He's about as injury-wrecked as the guys we traded away except with less upside and less years of control. Sure, we could use a guy to buy time for Thomas White, but here's the thing: We already had that with Ryan Weathers. Either way, this doesn't make any team sense under any context. -
Marlins sign Chris Paddack to one-year, $4M deal
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Uhh... have you even looked at Chris Paddack's statsheet? 2025 was the only time he's pitched more than 17 starts in the past 4 seasons. You're calling Cabrera and Weathers injury prone? We traded a younger injury-prone lefty with more years of control for an older injury-prone righty for 1 year and with a worse floor/ceiling. I don't see how this improves our team. -
Marlins sign Chris Paddack to one-year, $4M deal
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Honestly, the Marlins were forced to do this. They don't trade Ryan Weathers, they don't make this move. Unless they really liked the package they received from Weathers (I'm not buying it if what I heard about their tendencies are true), I don't understand why they didn't just keep Weathers in the first place. He would have moved the needle much more than Chris Paddack, at his very 2019 best, would have. We just traded a younger, oft-injured, much-coveted lefty pitcher for an older, oft-injured, much-less-coveted righty pitcher with a worse floor and worse ceiling, with this move. -
I think Josh Johnson not being in the HOF would be a crime. His peak years are years no current Marlin is able to even come close to. I still remember his 2011 season when every single outing of his (except for his injury-shortened last one) was a no-hitter waiting to happen. Nobody on the Marlins current roster is even close to sniffing that stratosphere. Dontrelle Willis was a model of going out there every 5 days and having an all-you-can-eat buffet of innings, the same type of mold Cy Young award winner Sandy Alcantara is made out of. He should be inducted, too.

Can the Marlins make another 10 game leap in 2026?
One Regend replied to Miller Lepree's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
There's also some little things that need to be noted. -Agustin Ramirez not catching (be it DH or 1B), by itself, would swing the win total by at least 3 games. Especially if Joe Mack successfully makes the transition to the majors. -A lot of the players you doubted could have just as much of a chance to build on their breakout year (Marsee) or maintain it (Stowers) as they have a chance to regress. -Robby Snelling could shove enough to become an everyday starting pitcher, though the Marlins might hold off until late April to delay service time clock. -Thomas White, but likely the Marlins will wait even longer for him than they will Snelling. If he's as electric as he's advertised to be, he could be an X-Factor. -
The problem with that is he won't be able to do that in 2026. Surgery and all.

Why the Marlins should not trade for Nick Castellanos
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Castellanos would make for a nice feel-good story as a Hialeah kid, but that's all he brings to the table. He's a mess defensively, and while moving him to 1B would make sense for this stage of his career, I don't see how he's an upgrade over simply moving Agustin Ramirez there. Ramirez is 24 years old making the league minimum, and Castellanos is about to be 34 and is making $20 million for 2026 on the last year of his contract. I don't think I feel the need to clarify myself further. -
Nah, I'm still not sold on Starlyn Caba being a top-10 prospect. He could have Barry Bonds level discipline during winter ball, and it still won't change my opinion. He's a hideously overrated prospect, and if you believe that highly in him, you'll just be left disappointed when he makes next to no impact at the MLB level. He has a slick glove and can cover a lot of ground at short, so, at best, he's a backup middle-infielder at the major league level. He doesn't have the tools in the batter's box to be a regular. Sure, he has a good eye and can take pitches for walks, but he's doing this at low-level competition. He WON'T continue to get away with this at higher levels.

You've already mentioned Monte Harrison, but you know who else had an "impressive" power-speed combo? Lewis Brinson. Both players were in the same Yelich trade... the same trade that, at the time, was ALSO mentioned to have players too good to pass up on. Nope. Nuh-uh. I'm not falling for this trap again. I've seen this song and dance before. These players with impressive tools will have one fatal flaw (or more) that'll completely prevent them from contributing anything of value to the team. There's a reason why the Yankees were so eager to get rid of these prospects, and I'm very, very afraid to find out why. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Marlins acquire Bradley Blalock from Rockies
One Regend replied to Nate Karzmer's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
We go from one pitcher who could benefit from being away from Sutter Health Park to a pitcher who could benefit from being away from Coors Field. In which case, why didn't they just stick with Bido? He has way more upside than Blalock and has an actual track record of success (however little of it there is) Is the 1 extra minor league option even worth it? Neither of these players are long-term Marlins, so why even bother?- 5 replies

Marlins claim pitcher Osvaldo Bido off waivers
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
I'd take those numbers with a grain of salt. He pitched half of his games at Sutter Health Park, ballpark with such a significant offensive environment that only Coors Field is considered worse for pitchers. Going from 2.6 HR/9 in Sutter Health Park to 1.5 HR/9 on the road (which is still bad but nowhere close to what his home ballpark splits would suggest) I feel would dramatically affect his overall results. Now, I'm not expecting him to turn into a Jesus Tinoco. He still has concerning metrics, walking more batters on average than in 2024, and striking out signficiantly less batters overall. But I can't help but feel his numbers were inflated largely because of his home ballpark. -
Marlins trade Ryan Weathers to New York Yankees
One Regend replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
What the hell are the Marlins doing? Okay. I can understand trading Edward Cabrera. Trading him means you make room for Robby Snelling. Sandy Alcantara is leaving in free agency next year, so Thomas White will get an opportunity to run away with a starting role if he performs well this year. This trade, however, makes zero sense. Now if Eury Perez gets injured, Robby Snelling underperforms, and/or Braxton Garrett suffers a setback (all of which are realistic scenarios, FYI), what's the contingency plan? Hope that Dax Fulton and Adam Mazur pitches way over their heads? Hope that Janson Junk repeats his unsustainable 2025? This makes zero sense under any context. I was hoping we'd get a 3B prospect, but, not like this... No, Trading Cabrera wasn't going to kill any hopes of this team competing. If anything, this trade might have.- 23 replies

Even Eury Perez didn't perform anywhere as well in 2025 as he did in 2023. He still managed a semi-respectable 4.25 ERA and a 3.67 FIP in spite of his awful stretches, Eury Perez got by on just his stuff alone, even with shaky command. When it comes to returning from surgery, often, command is the last thing that returns. This is true for every pitcher. Sandy Alcantara doesn't post great strikeout numbers. He relies on command. If he doesn't have command of his pitches, he gets cratered by the opposing team. He didn't have command for a large portion of the season last year. This was how his ERA was over 7.00 for much of that season. Braxton Garrett is even more reliant on command than Sandy is. You can see how I'm worried about Braxton Garrett coming off of surgery.
-
That's because he has spent quite a long time without having any real game action, and post-surgery, we won't know what we we'll get. Expecting a soft-tossing lefty like Garrett to return to form after missing nearly 2 years worth of game action is a pipe dream. I know this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, but Sandy Alcantara missed less time than Garrett, and it took a hair over 3 months of ugly pitching from him to finally find his groove. It takes more time than others for pitchers who rely entirely on command, and out of our starters, there is no starter on our team that is more reliant on command than Braxton Garrett; especially when his average velo is in the bottom 6th percentile in the league. (This was in 2024. I'd expect that number to be even worse this year) I'd keep your expectations reserved on Garrett.
-
Of the pitchers listed, I'm only interested in Jalen Beeks. We don't need starting pitchers that won't move the needle to block Robby Snelling or Thomas White from reaching the majors. Even if those two need to miss the opening day to delay their service clock, we have Adam Mazur, Ryan Gusto, and Janson Junk to hold the fort until they're ready to go.
