Offishial News: First Mets meeting of 2024; Mexican pitcher signed
Ely Sussman posted an article in Marlins
Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 5-2. OF Victor Mesa Jr. (FOF #4 prospect) hit a leadoff home run and INF/OF Javier Sanoja (FOF #26) went 3-for-3 with a walk, but the Jumbo Shrimp have now dropped 14 of their last 15 games. Double-A Pensacola won, 4-1. OF Paul McIntosh went 4-for-4 with a triple. High-A Beloit won, 6-0. Third straight quality start for LHP Cade Gibson (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 83 pitches/56 strikes). INF Josh Zamora hit his team-leading fifth homer. Low-A Jupiter lost, 6-5. OF Angelo DiSpigna went 3-for-3 with a walk and his first professional homer. FCL Marlins won, 9-1. The team went 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts, three of those by 1B Julio Henriquez, who's leading the Florida Complex League batting title race (.500 BA). Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 Take a look at 19-year-old Mexican LHP Ian Medina, who signed with the Marlins as an international amateur free agent on April 30. The 19-year-old is listed at 6'0", 195 pounds. 🔷 Hector Rodriguez's latest 2024 MLB Draft profile focuses on prep infielder Theo Gillen. MLB Pipeline's updated mock draft has the Marlins taking Florida State 3B Cam Smith with their first-round pick (covered here in one of Hector's previous articles). 🔷 Fourth graders at Milan Elementary School were tasked with dressing up as a "famous person from Indiana" and one of them went as Bryan Hoeing. Hoeing arranged a Zoom call with the kid, Xavier DeBolt, to introduce himself and give some positive reinforcement. 🔷 Join us for a new episode of Fish On First LIVE tonight from 6:00-7:00 p.m. ET on YouTube/Twitter/Facebook. FOF LIVE is presented by Berger & Hicks. If you’ve been injured as a result of somebody else’s negligence, give them a call at (305) 670-7050. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Mets closer Edwin Díaz blew his third save of 2024, already matching the total from his brilliant 2022 season, though the Mets won in extra innings. Yankees RHP Clarke Schmidt shoved eight scoreless innings against the Twins. The Rockies still have MLB's longest winning streak (seven in a row). The vast majority of our Twitter followers don't think the Marlins will have any streaks longer than five games this season. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Jesús Luzardo) open a new homestand against the Mets (RHP Christian Scott). The Marlins have a 48.8% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 7:10 p.m. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville vs. Nashville, 7:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola at Montgomery, 7:35 p.m. ET High-A Beloit at Wisconsin, 7:40 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Dunedin, 6:30 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes -

Offishial News: The most obscure winning streak in baseball
Ely Sussman posted an article in Marlins
On Tuesday, Ryan Weathers and Reese Olson traded zeroes for eight innings, with Weathers retiring the first 15 Tigers batters he faced. Finally in the top of the 10th, Jesús Sánchez plated the automatic runner on second base. A.J. Puk recorded his first save of the season. The Marlins won, 1-0. That extends the most obscure streak in Major League Baseball: per BrooksGate, the Marlins have won the 44th game on their regular season schedule in each of the past 12 seasons. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 12-2. For the first time all season, OF Victor Mesa Jr. (FOF #4 prospect) has gone hitless in consecutive games. The Jumbo Shrimp have lost 12 of their last 13 contests. Double-A Pensacola lost, 3-2. High-A Beloit lost, 7-3. Low-A Jupiter won, 9-6. OF Dillon Head (FOF #5) had an enormous impact in his debut with the Marlins organization, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and turning a double play in center field. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 Weathers produced excellent results without dominance. Only 18.6% of his pitches were whiffs/called strikes. Even so, he went two innings deeper than any other Marlins pitcher has gone in a start this season. It was Sandy Alcantara-esque. 🔷 Happy 22nd birthday to LHP Emmett Olson. The fourth-round draft pick has yielded only one run through his first five starts of the season (27.2 IP). He's got a four-seam fastball/slider/changeup/curveball pitch mix that covers a wide range of velocities, from 72-94 mph. Olson has risen to No. 27 on our FOF Top 30 list. 🔷 Marlins Historian dug up old footage of a Marlins rain delay from a fan's perspective. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Aaron Nola shut out the Mets as the Phillies became the first MLB team to reach 30 wins this season. Another outstanding outing for Chris Sale (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K). Health permitting, he's on track for his first All-Star selection since 2018. Make it six straight wins for the lowly Rockies! 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Trevor Rogers) conclude their road trip against the Tigers (RHP Casey Mize). The Marlins have a 43.5% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 1:10 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville vs. Nashville, 12:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola at Montgomery, 7:35 p.m. ET High-A Beloit at Wisconsin, 1:10 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Dunedin, 6:30 p.m. ET FCL Marlins at FCL Nationals, 12:00 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes-

Ryan Weathers just did his best Sandy Alcantara impression
Ely Sussman posted an article in Podcasts
Ely Sussman discusses Ryan Weathers' scoreless start vs. the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday and what it had in common with a vintage Sandy Alcantara performance. Find Big Fish Small Pod on the Fish On First YouTube channel, our new-look Apple Podcasts channel and wherever else you get your pods. FOF's audio programming also includes The Offishial Show, Fish Unfiltered, Swimming Upstream and more. The Fish On First podcast is now being presented by MPT College Consulting! They pride themselves on helping clients navigate the college application process. This includes preparation for standardized testing, guidance through high school, assistance with essays and applications, and choosing the right college. Visit them today at mptcollegeconsulting.com to learn more about their services and schedule a free consultation. Weathers' final line against Detroit: 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 97 pitches/65 strikes. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning. It was the longest start of the left-hander's major league career and he also posted his highest groundball rate as a starter (68.2 GB%). On a night when Weathers was rarely getting swinging strikes, he trusted his stuff enough to pound the strike zone and create easy chances for the defense behind him. Sound familiar? Over his last three starts combined (20.0 IP), Weathers has issued only one walk. He has taken over as the Marlins' leader this season with 1.0 bWAR. On Monday, Sixto Sánchez was...fine! Not good, but he showed enough to stick in the Marlins rotation for at least another start by consistently inducing grounders. Otto Lopez cranked a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eight inning. Alas, Anthony Maldonado relinquished the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The Marlins lost, 6-5. Down on the farm, RHP M.D. Johnson was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 Tim Anderson (lower back tightness) landed on the injured list and will be out for at least another week. A.J. Puk made his return from the IL as the corresponding roster move. Combining the departure of Luis Arraez with Anderson's absence, Vidal Bruján is now a true everyday player for the Fish (he has started each of their last 10 games). 🔷 On the latest episode of Fish On First LIVE, we discussed Anderson's struggles, potential Marlins/Tigers trades and much more. FOF LIVE is presented by Berger & Hicks. If you’ve been injured as a result of somebody else’s negligence, give them a call at (305) 670-7050. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Roku is the new exclusive home of super-early Sunday MLB games. The August 18 Marlins/Mets matchup will be broadcasted there. Baseball Savant has released new Statcast bat tracking data. Jesús Sánchez (75.6 mph) has the fastest average bat speed on the Marlins this season, followed by Jake Burger (75.1 mph). The Rockies extended their winning streak to five (no other MLB team has won more than two in a row). MLB's top two qualified starters in earned run average, Shota Imanaga and Reynaldo López, faced off and exchanged zeroes with each other through five innings (the Braves went on to win). Bryan Reynolds went 5-for-5 with 10 total bases in a Pirates win. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Ryan Weathers) visit the Tigers (RHP Reese Olson). The Marlins have a 38.9% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 6:40 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville vs. Nashville, 7:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola at Montgomery, 7:35 p.m. ET High-A Beloit at Wisconsin, 7:40 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Dunedin, 6:30 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes

He's near the top of my queue for that. Next up, unfortunately, I've got to dive in on this Jacob Berry disaster. Even as somebody who had low expectations for him entering the season, Berry's numbers are astonishing.

On Sunday, Braxton Garrett made his 2024 debut (5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 80 pitches/49 strikes). Garrett was great for much of the afternoon, but allowed a three-run home run to Nick Castellanos in the first inning and Andrew Nardi blew the Marlins' lead in the sixth (inheriting two runners from Garrett who both scored). Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached base safely three times, raising his wRC+ to 116 for the first time since early April. Emmanuel Rivera lined a walk-off RBI single off of Gregory Soto's leg (only the fifth run that Rivera has driven in this season). The Marlins won, 7-6. Three of their last five wins have been of the walk-off variety. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 6-5. Another two-inning relief appearance for RHP Huascar Brazoban, who looks to be a call-up candidate once there's an opening for another righty in Miami's bullpen. Double-A Pensacola won, 6-4. Nathan Martorella was deployed in left field for the fifth time in six games since being acquired by the Marlins. He slashed .320/.370/.360 during his first week in the organization. High-A Beloit lost, 9-3. RHP Alex Williams (4.0 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) continues to have a very rough season. Low-A Jupiter won, 6-4. Every Hammerheads hitter reached base safely at least once while RHP Jake Brooks (5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) pitched like his usual self. Here's more Marlins news and content for you: 🔷 Listen back to Sunday's State of the Fish call-in show. 🔷 Through 13 Marlins series, @Daniel Rodriguez holds a one-point lead atop the Prediction Time leaderboard. Make series predictions with us all season long when you become a Fish On First SuperSub. 🔷 Christina De Nicola of MLB.com spoke to LHP Emmett Olson about pitching effectively without being a hard thrower. Cool anecdote about how Marlins pitching coordinator Tommy Phelps showed him a different changeup grip during a recent visit to Beloit and Olson has immediately noticed the difference. 🔷 Riley Clingman wants to see Otto Lopez get more opportunities at shortstop if Tim Anderson does not turns things around. 🔷 RHP Noble Meyer ranks 46th, RHP Max Meyer ranks 84th and LHP Thomas White ranks 90th among MLB prospects on MLB Pipeline's updated Top 100 list. 🔷 Josh Billy is seeking a sponsor for his son's 8U baseball team. Consider helping out if you're able to! 🔷 Join us for a new episode of Fish On First LIVE tonight from 5:30-6:30 p.m. ET on YouTube/Twitter/Facebook. FOF LIVE is presented by Berger & Hicks. Marcell Ozuna drove in his MLB-leading 39th and 40th runs of the season, but Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run walk-off home run to push the Mets past the Braves. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Sixto Sánchez) visit the Tigers (RHP Matt Manning). A.J. Puk is likely to be reinstated from the injured list prior to the game. The Marlins have a 44.7% chance to win, per FanGraphs. Marlins Prospect Spotlight: M. Meyer, Fitterer, Miller, Ignoffo
Ely Sussman posted an article in Podcasts
Ely Sussman shares recent stats and observations about prospects from each full-season level of the Miami Marlins farm system: Triple-A Jacksonville RHP Max Meyer, Double-A Pensacola RHP Evan Fitterer, High-A Beloit RHP Jacob Miller and Low-A Jupiter C Ryan Ignoffo. Max Meyer has posted a 9.24 ERA, 6.05 FIP, 1.97 WHIP in 12.2 IP (4 GS) since being sent down to Jacksonville, using his changeup nearly twice as often as he did in the majors. Evan Fitterer has strung together three consecutive scoreless starts for the Blue Wahoos (streak of 20.1 IP overall). A promotion to Jacksonville shouldn't be far away. Jacob Miller is showing improved command and increased horizontal movement on his fastball. His ERA is 2.01 through five starts this season. The Marlins' final selection of the 2023 MLB Draft, Ryan Ignoffo is converting to catcher in Jupiter. He is hitting extremely well at Low-A (.322/.423/.475, 161 wRC+), though his defense understandably is still a work in progress. Follow Ely (@RealEly) and Fish On First (@FishOnFirst) on Twitter. Big Fish Small Pod for Monday, May 13 Ely Sussman shares recent stats and observations about prospects from each full-season level of the Miami Marlins farm system: Triple-A Jacksonville RHP Max Meyer, Double-A Pensacola RHP Evan Fitterer, High-A Beloit RHP Jacob Miller and Low-A Jupiter C Ryan Ignoffo.
