Keeping tabs on all of the Marlins players who are still getting game reps during the MLB/MiLB offseason. The 2024 season ended long ago for most members of the Miami Marlins organization, but for some, that was merely the end of their affiliated ball campaign. They have since returned to action in the Arizona Fall League and international winter leagues to further their development or compensate for time they missed over the summer. This page will be updated to remove the names of any players who switch to other MLB organizations via free agency or trade. Likewise, Marlins offseason acquisitions will be added if they were fall/winter ball participants. Player names are linked to their Baseball-Reference pages. 3 Marlins taken in LIDOM rookie draft; Jazz seals Yankees walk-off win
Ely Sussman posted an article in Marlins
On Wednesday, Bailey Falter made it through 6 ⅓ innings before yielding his first hit. Jonathan Bermúdez labored in his first major league start, but all of the other Marlins arms threw up zeroes, most notably Xzavion Curry (4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 59 pitches/36 strikes). John McMillon suffered a forearm injury that will presumably end his season prematurely. The Marlins lost, 3-1. It's the only time in their 31 seasons of head-to-head play that the Pirates have swept an entire season series against the Fish. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville swept their doubleheader, winning 3-1 and 4-3. Braxton Garrett (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 59 pitches/33 strikes) made his second minor league rehab start. Expect him to stay with the Jumbo Shrimp for a third one to continue stretching out. 1B Deyvison De Los Santos and OF Jacob Berry each homered in the second game. It was De Los Santos' 38th long ball—no other player has more than 32 in the minors this season. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 LHP Keyner Benítez (Toros del Este), RHP Eliazar Dishmey (Gigantes del Cibao) and RHP Delvis Alegre (Águilas Cibaeñas) were selected in Wednesday's Dominican Winter League rookie draft. Dominican-born players on full-season MiLB rosters as of August 1 were eligible for the draft (h/t Jordan Shusterman, Cespedes Family BBQ). Benítez, Dishmey and Alegre each spent the majority of the 2024 regular season with Low-A Jupiter. Alegre could become a minor league free agent this winter and isn't in Miami's plans moving forward, but Benítez and Dishmey are talented teenagers with legitimate MLB upside. They will be non-factors during the upcoming LIDOM season. Rather, they were drafted to be potential long-term contributors once they're further along in their development. 🔷 Jesús Luzardo is the Marlins nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. Vote for Luzardo here through September 29. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the sport's most unhittable starting pitcher over the last calendar month, Bowden Francis, carried a perfect game into the ninth inning. However, Francisco Lindor broke it up with a game-tying home run, igniting a six-run rally for the Mets. Jake Irvin carried a no-no into the sixth, beating the Braves, who have temporarily fallen out of playoff position. Jazz Chisholm Jr. sealed a Yankees victory with an infield single that drove home fellow old friend Jon Berti. It was the first walk-off hit of Chisholm's career. Shohei Ohtani recorded his 47th home run and 48th stolen base. The White Sox lost for the 114th time. 🔷 This seems like the appropriate time to check in on how Chisholm's New York tenure is going. He's being used almost exclusively at third base and typically batting fifth or sixth in the Yankees lineup. Through 32 games, his 1.7 fWAR already matches his output from 101 Marlins games earlier this season. There has been an 100-point uptick in his Isolated Power (from .158 to .258) and he's been perfect on 13 stolen base attempts. Safe to say, the Yankees are thrilled with their side of the deal thus far. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Darren McCaughan) face the Nationals (LHP DJ Herz) in the opener of a four-game set. Speaking of no-hit bids, Herz went five scoreless frames with one intact during his previous start. The Marlins have a 40.8% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 6:45 p.m. ET. 🔷 Join us for a new episode of Fish On First LIVE today from 5:30-6:30 p.m. ET on YouTube/Twitter/Facebook. FOF LIVE is presented by Berger & Hicks. If you’ve been injured as a result of somebody else’s negligence, give them a call at (305) 670-7050. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Charlotte, 7:04 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Montgomery, doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes- 1 comment

On Tuesday, there was plenty of production from the bottom of the Marlins lineup—Kyle Stowers went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Jhonny Pereda had his first career three-hit game. However, Adam Oller (5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 83 pitches/51 strikes) struggled in his final inning of work. Connor Norby and Xavier Edwards both got the night off (Norby due to left foot soreness). The Marlins lost, 6-4. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 6-2. On his 23rd birthday, C Agustín Ramírez went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Double-A Pensacola lost, 6-1. The only Blue Wahoos offense came from Nathan Martorella's solo home run. OF Kemp Alderman went 1-for-4 and played left field in his Double-A debut. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 The Marlins claimed reliever Michael Petersen after he had been designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Sunday. The hard-throwing 30-year-old right-hander has a 6.43 ERA and 6.32 FIP in 14 innings pitched in the majors this season with two minor league options remaining for 2025 and beyond. Brett de Geus was DFA'd as the corresponding roster move. 70b0a38b-b3c1-4a91-9a15-0b9100dd8eea.mp4 🔷 So long, Sugar Kings. The Marlins will be wearing their current City Connect uniforms one final time on September 21. New City Connects are coming in 2025. 🔷 Single-game tickets for the Choque De Gigantes winter ball tournament at loanDepot park go on sale later today (h/t Daniel Álvarez-Montes, El Extrabase). The tournament runs from November 8-10 featuring three Venezuelan teams, two Puerto Rican teams and one Dominican team. 🔷 Jesús Luzardo is the Marlins nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. Vote for Luzardo here through September 29. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Yoshinobu Yamamoto returned to the Dodgers rotation after nearly three months on the injured list. Kyle Schwarber set the MLB single-season record for most leadoff home runs, but also exited the game early with a left elbow contusion. Reynaldo López left his start after one inning due to right shoulder tightness. Tigers rookie Keider Montero threw a shutout against the Rockies. The White Sox suffered their 113th loss. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter LHP Jonathan Bermúdez) face the Pirates (LHP Bailey Falter) in a getaway day matinee. The Marlins are in danger of getting swept by Pittsburgh in a season series for the first time ever. First pitch at 12:35 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Charlotte, doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Montgomery, 7:05 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes

The final Miami Marlins Saturday home game of the 2024 season will also be the final time that the team wears its Cuban Sugar Kings-themed City Connect uniforms, as announced on Tuesday night. A new City Connect uniform is being introduced in 2025, Billy Gil of the Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz reports. The red unis debuted on May 21, 2021. They honored the "legacy" of the Cuban Sugar Kings, who played in the Triple-A International League from 1954-1960. The unis used Legacy Red, Miami Blue and Midnight Black in their color scheme along with white pinstripes. The caps featured a crown with the initials "MM" (for Miami Marlins). Many City Connect products are discounted on MLB Shop in the aftermath of this news. The Marlins have posted an all-time record of 22-26 while wearing their City Connects (pending the Sept. 21 finale vs. the Atlanta Braves). Seven MLB teams were part of the initial wave of City Connects in 2021. The Marlins join the Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants among those who have confirmed that they are "retiring" their initial designs. My speculation is that the 2025 City Connect reboot will incorporate elements of the "Florida Marlins" era. The Sugar Kings campaign had a high approval rating, but something that leans into the signature teal from the franchise's early years could be even sexier. Nonetheless, it's frustrating that the uniform contract between Major League Baseball and Nike limits the number of different designs teams can use within a single season.

After four seasons of wearing their popular red uniforms for Saturday home games, the Marlins will reportedly introduce a new City Connect uni in 2025. On Monday, Marlins batters struck out 14 times, with nine of those coming against Pirates rookie phenom Paul Skenes. However, Xavier Edwards, Jesús Sánchez and Otto Lopez each went 2-for-4 at the plate and Valente Bellozo (5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 91 pitches/57 strikes) kept the game within reach. A ninth-inning rally against Aroldis Chapman came up just short. The Marlins lost, 3-2. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 Congrats to Jesús Luzardo on being the Marlins nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. Jorge Soler was their nominee last year. The award is is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Luzardo has shown his dedication to South Florida by participating in fantasy camps hosted by the Marlins Foundation, regularly visiting local schools and hospitals, and launching his own foundation, seeking to "empower and uplift children from undeserved communities." Vote for Luzardo here through September 29. 🔷 Soon after the MLB regular season ends, international winter ball leagues get underway! As announced by their respective teams on Monday, Marlins RHP Austin Roberts has signed with Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) and INF Johnny Olmstead is committed to Senadores de San Juan in Puerto Rico (LBPRC). In the meantime, Roberts and Olmstead are finishing out their MiLB campaigns with Triple-A Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola, respectively. 🔷 Happy 23rd birthday to Agustín Ramírez. Acquired by the Marlins in the Jazz Chisholm trade, Ramírez is slashing .263/.354/.478 with a 127 wRC+, 23 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season (most of that coming with the Yankees organization). Fish On First's fourth-ranked prospect, he should be getting very serious consideration to crack the 2025 Opening Day roster. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Guardians rookie Joey Cantillo came seven outs shy of throwing a perfect game against the White Sox, who are now up to 112 losses. Kody Clemens had a walk-off RBI single for the Phillies. The Twins lost their fourth in a row and now have only a three-game cushion for the American League's final Wild Card spot. The Yankees called up top prospect Jasson Dominguez. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Adam Oller) will continue to seek their first head-to-head win against the Pirates this season. The home team will go with a Carmen Mlodzinski-led bullpen game. The Marlins have a 36.2% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 6:40 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Charlotte, 6:35 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola vs. Montgomery, 7:05 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes

On Sunday, Connor Norby stayed scorching hot with two home runs, raising his slugging percentage to .671 through 18 games with the Marlins. Javier Sanoja went 2-for-4 in his first major league start, beginning the game in center field and finishing it at shortstop. Griffin Conine went 3-for-4. They combined to provide more than enough run support for Edward Cabrera, who carried a no-hitter through five innings and held the Phillies scoreless for seven. Lake Bachar struck out the side in his Marlins debut, becoming the club's 69th player used this season. The Marlins won, 10-1, which matched their largest margin of victory in 2024. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 9-8. Ryan Weathers made his second minor league rehab start (2.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 64 pitches/39 strikes). The Jumbo Shrimp overcame five errors, including one committed by Weathers himself. Expect the left-hander to pitch at least one more time with Jacksonville before being reinstated from the injured list. Double-A Pensacola won, 6-5. Another multi-hit game for Johnny Olmstead, who is slashing .257/.321/.429 with the Blue Wahoos and has quietly overtaken Cody Morissette for the starting second base job. High-A Beloit lost, 7-1. Low-A Jupiter lost, 23-8 (setting a season-high for runs allowed). The final regular season records for the Sky Carp and Hammerheads were 60-69 and 65-65, respectively. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 Sunday's State of the Fish call-in show was divided into two parts (here and here) due to technical difficulties. 🔷 I explored Norby's obsession with swinging at the first pitch. Although he hit another first-pitch homer on Sunday, in most cases, his aggressiveness is putting him in disadvantageous counts and limiting his opportunities to draw walks. 🔷 Through 46 Marlins series, here's an updated look at the Prediction Time leaderboard. Make series predictions with us all season long when you become a Fish On First SuperSub. 🔷 On this day 10 years ago, the Marlins used back-to-back blasts from Casey McGehee and Marcell Ozuna to top the Brewers. 🔷 The Marlins were patient with Otto Lopez during a midseason slump. Skip Schumaker spoke to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola about the importance of positive reinforcement in situations like that. Lopez has quietly played every single inning of every game since August 4 with good results. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Reds rallied in the ninth inning to snap the Mets' nine-game winning streak. Pavin Smith carried the Diamondbacks over the Astros with a 3 HR/8 RBI game. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Valente Bellozo) begin their second-to-last road trip of the season by facing the Pirates (RHP Paul Skenes). Last year's top overall draft pick has exceeded the hype. Since making his major league debut on May 11, Skenes' 2.13 ERA is the best in MLB among pitchers with at least 70 innings during that span. It's also a reunion with former Marlins outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, whose Pirates tenure has frankly gone horribly. The Marlins have a 24.8% chance to win, per FanGraphs. Of the many young players that the Miami Marlins acquired earlier this season in exchange for big league veterans, Connor Norby arrived with arguably the highest expectations. Through his first three weeks in the Marlins lineup, he's blown past those expectations. Norby entered Sunday with a .319/.365/.594 slash line (162 wRC+) in 17 games since being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville. He has combined incredible consistency with surprising power—only the great Hanley Ramírez had as many extra-base hits through his first 17 Marlins games as Norby does. He has not only solidified himself as an everyday player entering 2025, but somebody who belongs near the top of a major league batting order. Eventually, though, I expect MLB opponents to exploit Norby's unorthodox plate approach. Norby has been aggressive as a rookie. With Miami and Baltimore combined, he has drawn only five walks, a 4.7 BB% that would rank in the bottom 10th percentile of major leaguers if he had enough playing time to qualify. Four of those five walks came at Coors Field against the lousy Colorado Rockies pitching staff. He is being served more pitches in the strike zone than an average hitter would see, but that will likely change once the league recognizes how easily they can lure him to chase outside the zone. Plenty of neophytes lack discipline during their initial taste of The Show. What makes Norby unique is his eagerness to swing on the very first pitch he sees. 90669ee2-ca3dd2e3-c6a29519-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4 Norby has accrued 106 plate appearances in the majors so far. He has swung at the first pitch 63 times. That's a 59.4% first-pitch swinging rate. Only 18 of those 63 first-pitch swings (28.6%) have actually been put in play. In all the other instances, the result has been falling behind in the count 0-1 and facing an uphill battle from there. This approach isn't necessarily good or bad, but it is extreme. Across Major League Baseball, nobody with as much playing time as Norby comes anywhere close to him. Seattle Mariners outfielder Víctor Robles ranks second at 53.6%; he has enjoyed a very productive campaign...after being cut by his previous team, the Washington Nationals, earlier in 2024. Per Baseball-Reference, only nine total hitters this season (min. 100 PA) have swung at the majority of first pitches thrown to them: Highest First-Pitch Swinging Percentage, 2024 The most flattering comp would be Corey Seager. The Texas Rangers star shortstop is on a borderline Hall of Fame trajectory while consistently hacking at first pitches. This is the fourth consecutive season he's been above 50% in that category. However, his single-season peak is only 53.3% (set in 2021). If Norby maintains this, it will be the highest first-pitch swinging rate by any MLB hitter in a season of 100-plus plate appearances since Delmon Young in 2006 (64.1%). Like Norby, Young was a highly regarded rookie getting late-season reps for a non-competitive team. His career represents a realistic worst-case scenario for Norby. Young's lack of patience at the plate and below-average defense negated his run production—he totaled -1.4 fWAR across parts of 10 seasons despite a .283 batting average and 109 homers. With three weeks left in the regular season, I'll be curious to see whether Norby reigns in his first-pitch aggressiveness and how that may impact his overall stats. Looking ahead to 2025, I'm already wondering about the influence new coaches could have on him in the event that Skip Schumaker and his staff aren't brought back.
