Offishial News for 9/16/24 On Sunday (Roberto Clemente Day), MacKenzie Gore (6.0 IP. 0 ER) and James Wood (2-3, 2 HR, BB) shined brightest for the Nationals. Wood's second home run came against Declan Cronin, snapping his 65-inning/51-appearance, nearly season-long homerless streak. The Marlins lost, 4-3. Having fallen 13.5 games back of the Nats with only 12 regular season games remaining, the Fish have secured their 10th last-place finish in franchise history (first since 2019). Down on the farm, Double-A Pensacola won, 6-5. In their 2024 season finale, INF Josh Zamora cashed in the walk-off hit in the 10th inning off of position player Mason Auer. Blue Wahoos LHP Dale Stanavich has been promoted to Triple-A Jacksonville for the final week of their campaign. He's been arguably the best reliever in the Marlins org since the All-Star break, allowing only two earned runs (0.89 ERA) to go along with a 43.0 K%. It's been a season of constant roster turnover for the 2024 Marlins. Fittingly, they now own an all-time record to reflect that. This isn't quite the worst season in Miami Marlins history nor is it the weirdest—the 1998 and 2020 teams have a stranglehold on those distinctions, respectively. However, the 2024 edition of the Fish might finish runner-up in both categories. Peter Bendix's first season in charge of baseball operations has been plenty bad and plenty bizarre. You cannot point the finger at any particular player when there have been so, so many of them. More than any other team in MLB history, in fact. With the Miami debut of right-hander Michael Petersen during Friday night's game, the Marlins set an obscure record: most players used by a team in a single season. They broke a tie with the 2021 Chicago Cubs, who utilized 69 different individuals. It's been eclectic mix of players that Bendix inherited from the previous Marlins administration as well as trade acquisitions, waiver claims and free agent signings (Petersen was just claimed earlier this week). The body count doesn't even include Sandy Alcantara and Eury Pérez, who have been around the team for much of the regular season, but unable to contribute while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. By and large, it's been an inexperienced collection of talent. Of the 70 players used by the 2024 Marlins, nearly half of them entered the season with less than one full year of MLB service time, including 11 who have made their major league debuts with this club. Those with the most service time were Avisaíl García (released in June), Tim Anderson (released in July) and Josh Bell (salary-dumped in July). The final total will definitely surpass 70. Along with Petersen, right-hander Jeff Lindgren was also called up prior to the Nats series. Several injured pitchers are projected to return eventually, but their reinstatements are not imminent, so his active roster spot is temporarily safe. Additionally, four healthy players on the 40-man roster haven't yet played for the Marlins this season: Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley, Agustín Ramírez and Josh Simpson. The 2024 season ended long ago for most members of the Miami Marlins organization, but for some, that was merely the end of their affiliated ball campaign. Jonathan Bermúdez labored in his first major league start, but all of the other Marlins arms threw up zeroes, most notably Xzavion Curry (4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 59 pitches/36 strikes). John McMillon suffered a forearm injury that will presumably end his season prematurely. The Marlins lost, 3-1. It's the only time in their 31 seasons of head-to-head play that the Pirates have swept an entire season series against the Fish. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville swept their doubleheader, winning 3-1 and 4-3. Braxton Garrett (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 59 pitches/33 strikes) made his second minor league rehab start. Expect him to stay with the Jumbo Shrimp for a third one to continue stretching out. 1B Deyvison De Los Santos and OF Jacob Berry each homered in the second game. It was De Los Santos' 38th long ball—no other player has more than 32 in the minors this season. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 LHP Keyner Benítez (Toros del Este), RHP Eliazar Dishmey (Gigantes del Cibao) and RHP Delvis Alegre (Águilas Cibaeñas) were selected in Wednesday's Dominican Winter League rookie draft. Dominican-born players on full-season MiLB rosters as of August 1 were eligible for the draft (h/t Jordan Shusterman, Cespedes Family BBQ). Benítez, Dishmey and Alegre each spent the majority of the 2024 regular season with Low-A Jupiter. Alegre could become a minor league free agent this winter and isn't in Miami's plans moving forward, but Benítez and Dishmey are talented teenagers with legitimate MLB upside. They will be non-factors during the upcoming LIDOM season. Rather, they were drafted to be potential long-term contributors once they're further along in their development. 🔷 Jesús Luzardo is the Marlins nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. Vote for Luzardo here through September 29. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the sport's most unhittable starting pitcher over the last calendar month, Bowden Francis, carried a perfect game into the ninth inning. However, Francisco Lindor broke it up with a game-tying home run, igniting a six-run rally for the Mets. Jake Irvin carried a no-no into the sixth, beating the Braves, who have temporarily fallen out of playoff position. Jazz Chisholm Jr. sealed a Yankees victory with an infield single that drove home fellow old friend Jon Berti. It was the first walk-off hit of Chisholm's career. Shohei Ohtani recorded his 47th home run and 48th stolen base. The White Sox lost for the 114th time. 🔷 This seems like the appropriate time to check in on how Chisholm's New York tenure is going. He's being used almost exclusively at third base and typically batting fifth or sixth in the Yankees lineup. Through 32 games, his 1.7 fWAR already matches his output from 101 Marlins games earlier this season. There has been an 100-point uptick in his Isolated Power (from .158 to .258) and he's been perfect on 13 stolen base attempts. Safe to say, the Yankees are thrilled with their side of the deal thus far. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Darren McCaughan) face the Nationals (LHP DJ Herz) in the opener of a four-game set.
