Fabian López (DSL Miami) homered for the third time and now leads all Marlins rookie ball players with 11 RBIs this season. For the second time in his last three games, Luis Arraez went 5-for-5 at the plate, upping his average to an even .400. Truly astounding.Jorge Soler assisted the offensive outburst with his 21st homer of the year, but he did not draw any walks. That snaps his franchise record-tying streak of 10 games with at least one base on balls.Eight different Marlins players drove in runs on Monday, including rookie Jacob Amaya, who will presumably get a start tonight against Blue Jays lefty Yusei Kikuchi.Elsewhere around the majors, Joey Votto made his 2023 season debut. He homered to help the Reds to their ninth straight win and they took over the National League Central division lead in the process. The Giants rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Padres for their eighth consecutive victory. Some of their interactions look legitimately painful! On this day 20 years ago, Miguel Cabrera made his MLB debut. Jacob Berry (Beloit) continues to increase his reps at first base, starting three of his six games there this past week. In his 11th rehab game with Jupiter, Paul McIntosh went 1-for-4 with a walk. 12. Yes, I prefer to look at how he stacks up to others in the 3-batter minimum era. Only Nardi and Bender.
  13. I don't see a scenario where they finish ahead of the Braves. Atlanta's rotation is such a mess at the moment and it doesn't even matter because of all the talent they have elsewhere. All about the Wild Card race, which is looking really promising.
  14. By season's end, he might be playing at the same level as his younger brother Ethan. Question being whether that's because Ethan gets hurried up to High-A or Salas gets sent down to reset.

  17. The skilled shortstop gets his first shot at The Show after sustained success at Triple-A.Prior to Saturday's game, the Miami Marlins recalled Jacob Amaya, one of the organization's top position player prospects. He'll be wearing uniform No. 67. Jean Segura (left hamstring strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list as the corresponding move. The Marlins acquired Amaya from the Los Angeles Dodgers in January in exchange for Miguel Rojas. The 24-year-old wasn't able to crack the Opening Day roster, but he's been hitting well with Triple-A Jacksonville for the better part of two months to make his call-up case. https://fishonfirst.com/game-coverage/at-the-ballpark/marlins-prospects-jacob-amaya-interview/Amaya is especially productive with the platoon advantage. The right-handed hitter has a .922 OPS against lefties in 2023 after posting a .964 OPS against them last year (albeit in high-scoring offensive environments). Amaya wasn't in Saturday's starting lineup as the Marlins went up against Washington Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin. Through the first 70 games of the season, the Marlins have used Joey Wendle (34 starts), Jon Berti (25) and Garrett Hampson (11) at shortstop. Amaya has the potential to be a defensive upgrade over any of them. He has made SS his full-time defensive home, only moving off the position for a brief period in early May to accommodate Wendle during the veteran's rehab assignment. https://sporty-clips.mlb.com/bc50a13e-6a6c-4b0e-b370-7e447325c419.mp4The Marlins obviously would love for Amaya to solidify their starting shortstop spot the way Rojas did for a handful of years, but it's unreasonable to automatically expect that. Although a well-rounded player, he lacks electric tools. This period between now and the MLB trade deadline will be an important evaluation period. With the club in postseason contention, Amaya must perform firmly above replacement level to stick on the active roster and convince the Fish not to trade for an established alternative at the position. Amaya will become the fifth player to make his MLB debut for the Marlins in 2023, joining Xavier Edwards, Jeff Lindgren, Eury Pérez and George Soriano. Featured image courtesy of Miami Marlins

  21. Aside from getting demolished by the Phillies, I'd consider this his most disappointing/discouraging start of the season. I thought he was gradually on his way to being trustworthy again and this is an inexplicable step back.
