SD 9, MIA 4: Missed opportunities haunt Miami
Ely Sussman replied to Alex Krutchik's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
There is a big enough sample to say that Sandy is a different player in 2023 than he was in 2022. Need to adjust the managerial approach to him accordingly. The complication there is that means other starters have to do their part to fill in the innings that he isn't providing. Otherwise the bullpen gets overwhelmed. -

The Offishial Show: Best Marlins Free Agent Signing Since...Pudge?!
Ely Sussman posted an article in Podcasts
Ely Sussman looks at the Marlins' unfortunate history of bad free agent deals (and trading away the few who work out), concluding that Jorge Soler already ranks among their best pick-ups in recent memory. Then, we look ahead to the impending returns of Jesús Sánchez and Avisaíl García and what corresponding roster moves could be made. Enjoy Episode #197! Sunday's Games Marlins Podcast Episodes Sunday's Marlins MiLB notes: Jesús Sánchez (Jacksonville) went 3-for-5 with a home run in what he says will be his final rehab game. Geoff Hartlieb closed out the Jumbo Shrimp win and still hasn't allowed a run all year. Patrick Monteverde (Pensacola) had far and away his worst start of the season (3.0 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR). Torin Montgomery (Jupiter) went 3-for-3 with a walk. He's now slashing .295/.456/.410 and could force his way up to the Sky Carp if he maintains that a bit longer. Exactly one-third of the way through the Marlins regular season schedule, Jorge Soler is on pace to mash 51 home runs, while Jean Segura is on pace to join Luis Castillo (1999) as the only players in Marlins history to hit zero homers in a qualified season. Jesús Luzardo is on pace for 210 strikeouts—that'd be the second-highest total in franchise history (José Fernández had 253 K in 2016). Eury Pérez is on pace to throw 150 innings, nearly doubled his previous single-season high. Since launching this new "home" of ours, the Fish On First staff has written about Jake Mangum, Cobie Fletcher-Vance and MLB Draft prospect Yohandy Morales. Louis Addeo-Weiss penned our first game recap article—108 more where that one came from! Elsewhere around the majors, the Astros, Braves, Dodgers, Mets, Rockies and Yankees each scored double-digit runs. José Ramírez, Eugenio Suárez and Michael Massey had walk-off hits for the Guardians, Mariners and Royals, respectively. Right-hander Michael Soroka is scheduled to start for Atlanta today, nearly three full years removed from his last MLB appearance. The former National League All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year runner-up is still just 25 years old. Looking back at series predictions made by our staff and Super Subscribers, only Devin W. and David K. Tobin foresaw the Marlins sweeping the Angels. Reaching base safely in eight of his 14 plate appearances, Luis Arraez received Series MVP honors. Entering this new week, the Marlins have a 29.9% chance to make the playoffs, per FanGraphs. Triple-A Jacksonville (5:05 p.m. ET) is on the road in Durham and Avisaíl García (left back tightness) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment with them. Among his 24 stories from the Marlins' just-completed road trip, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald wrote about Yuli Gurriel's valuable clubhouse presence and Eury Pérez's determination to stick on the active roster. Here is his summary of the whole trip. As a reminder, we have deserted the @fishstripes Twitter account. Follow @FishOnFirst to interact with us on there moving forward.

Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara has collaborated with Kiwiclo on a limited collection of apparel that just went live on Friday. Starting at $38, they're offering a variety of shirts, hats, hoodies and shorts benefiting the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. The "Sandy Collection" depicts Alcantara in the middle of his delivery, wearing a cap with his personal logo on it. In the background, you can see the Miami skyline, palm trees, a marlin leaping out of the water and his 2022 NL Cy Young award. The "Miami Essential Collection" features items with the city's name in bright red, capital letters with a blue outline (items available in black or cement). Within a couple hours of the launch, some of the listed shorts had already sold out. There are also shirts and hoodies available in kid's sizes. https://www.instagram.com/p/CsteheEAMnU/Each Kiwiclo collection drop benefits a different charity. The David Ortiz Children's Fund was established by the Hall of Famer and fellow Dominican to provide support to children in the D.R. and in New England who cannot afford critical cardiac services. The organization says they have saved over 935 children via detection and screening, outreach to rural areas, child-life specialist support and emergency worker training. Alcantara is coming off a much-needed win against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR). Despite a career-worst 4.86 ERA through his first 10 starts of the season, his 3.80 FIP is almost identical to his lifetime 3.71 mark. He'll be fine.

Offishial news, 5/25/23: Bats break out; wild MLB comebacks
Ely Sussman posted an article in Marlins
Wednesday's Games Marlins Podcast Episodes Wednesday's Marlins MiLB notes: It was a rare winless day for Marlins affiliates. Peyton Burdick homered in his first game back in Jacksonville. He also struck out twice and got caught stealing. The Beloit Sky Carp committed six errors. The Jupiter Hammerheads were rained out. The Marlins erupted for a season-high 10 runs in support of Sandy Alcantara. Jonathan Davis went 3-for-4 with an opposite-field home run in his first-ever Marlins start. Yuli Gurriel became the fourth-oldest player in Marlins history to have a four-hit game–only Ichiro Suzuki, Andre Dawson and Luis González were older. Luis Arraez exited the game early with a left leg cramp. Elsewhere around the majors, the Orioles stunned the Yankees with an eight-run rally in the seventh inning. The Phillies came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Diamondbacks—the under-performing Trea Turner forced extra innings with a clutch home run. For the third straight start (and fifth time this season), Michael Kopech allowed two hits or fewer. The Marlins have a 53.1% chance to win their series finale vs. the Rockies, per FanGraphs. Triple-A Jacksonville (7:05 p.m. ET) is at home while Double-A Pensacola (7:35 p.m. ET), High-A Beloit (7:30 p.m. ET) and Low-A Jupiter (5:00 p.m. ET doubleheader) are on the road. To avoid another Jazz Chisholm Jr. situation, "additional padding will be added to the portions of the outfield wall at loanDepot Park that include exposed cement block," Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Rosenthal also confirms Christina De Nicola's original report that Chisholm's goal is to be reinstated from the injured list for the June 9-11 series against the White Sox. Congrats to the Florida Panthers on advancing to the Stanley Cup final!
