The last thing I expected to see this offseason was the Miami Marlins spending money on an old, left-handed-hitting outfielder. Although we are still many steps away from that coming to fruition, Mike Yastrzemski is "one possibility for them," Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Yastrzemski has been a consistently average-to-very-good player ever since he debuted in the majors in 2019. This past season was on track to be arguably the worst of his career, but a deadline deal sending Yaz to the Kansas City Royals rejuvenated his bat. In 146 total games in 2025, he slashed .233/.333/.403 with 17 home runs and seven stolen bases, accumulating 2.4 fWAR. He turned 35 in August.

As Morosi noted in his report, Marlins general manager Gabe Kapler was the San Francisco Giants manager from 2020-2023. Yastrzemski was on the team throughout Kapler's tenure.

It would still be a peculiar roster fit and use of resources. All-Star Kyle Stowers and standout rookie Jakob Marsee—both of whom also hit from the left side—are projected to be everyday starters for the Marlins. Griffin Conine and Heriberto Hernández could theoretically platoon to adequately fill the remaining corner outfield spot. Yastrzemski has generally rated well defensively, but his glove wouldn't be a clear upgrade over any of those names, particularly at this stage of his career. This rumor gets more confusing if the Marlins are contemplating a multi-year commitment because one of the best bats in their farm system, outfielder Kemp Alderman, is poised to debut at some point in 2026.

Starting Yastrzemski primarily as Miami's designated hitter would add some value. However, that implies Agustín Ramírez will continue catching on a regular basis, and his struggles there would negate a lot of the offensive boost.

Maybe the Marlins intend to convert somebody to first base? That is their most glaring hole entering 2026. Yaz has no professional experience at the position, for what it's worth.

Can’t see any realistic reason why the Marlins would sign Yaz.

Plenty of left handed bats in the outfield already.

Exactly. That's the number one reason. There are several others. See my post below.

This is the annual exercise in futility and STUPIDITY that the Marlins and the people covering them go through. The Marlins PRETEND to be serious players in the free agent market and the Marlins' press people, like the guys here at Fish Stripes, play along with them. We get one article after another all winter talking about possible free agents that the Marlins are going to sign. Why? Well, the Marlins get a lot of LUXURY TAX money that they are supposed to spend to improve the team and they get slammed for not doing so. As for Fish Stripes, they need something to write about, so they help the Marlins with this charade. So what happens in the end?

1) They spend A LITTLE MONEY so nobody can say they don't spend any.

2) They sign some washed up veteran that they really don't need; the Fish have loads of OF guys.

3) The guy they sign blocks some deserving young player from getting playing time.

Here's my opinion on what the Marlins should this off-season: Not much. Go after some middle relievers and set up guys, maybe someone who has closer stuff in case Ronny Henriquez doesn't work out at closer. We always can use more relievers. That's ALL. Let the young guys play. Plenty of young guys showed promise last year, and there are several guys in the minors ready to step up, like Joe Mack and Robby Snelling. Hold on to Sandy and Cabrera at least until the trade deadline to see what they have. The bottom line is this: since we all know that the Front Office is not going to seriously go after established stars who will cost hundreds of millions, don't settle for this year's Heath Bell or Placido Polanco. Let the youngsters play; they might shock us all!

How dumb can you get.  No way.

Well, they have to PRETEND to be serious players in free agency or people will say that Sherman is pocketing the Luxury Tax money instead of using it for what it is intended. But in the end they won't do much. They'll probably sign some washed up vet that they can get cheaply who will block some deserving young player from getting playing time.

As for "how dumb can they get", remember that this Front Office kept Eric WagaBUM and let Troy Johnston, a superior player IN EVERY WAY get claimed by the Rockies. So the answer is "VERY DUMB, and you ain't seen nothing yet!"

The Marlins have more than enough outfielders to go round. I still like the idea of giving Griffin Conine a 1st base glove and see if he like his dad, can do a decent job there. The bar is pretty low.

Signing a decent lefty reliever, trying Max Meyer in high leverage pen role and either trading for or signing a first baseman could move things forward

It won't be the worst thing to do. Heck, some non-tender candidates can help this team. Nathaniel Lowe was pretty good after being traded to Boston. Given how bad our 1B production was last year, adding Lowe would STILL be an upgrade at the postion, even as much as he struggled. That says a lot about our 1B situation.

Plus, it would be a way to upgrade the team while spending the least amount of money. That would make Sherman happy.
