How will Owen Caissie cut down on his strikeouts?
Robert Hanson replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
The Marlins are walking the tightrope of trying to develop players (Caissie, Marsee, Norby, Pauley, & last but not least, Eury). and trying to win games. Not easy watching guys slump/fail. However, it’s too early to pull the plug on any of these players. Need to give them as much opportunity as possible and live with the results. For now, keep running them out there with a day off or two mixed in, occasionally. -

The Marlins will win the series 2-1. Sandy Alcantara will be the MVP of the series. -
Always the toughest way to lose a game. Two blown saves by the bullpen on consecutive Tuesdays. What’s done is done. The only recourse is to shake it off, learn from the experience, and move on. IMO, the Marlins will rebound. We’ll see what happens over the next 144 games.

Keep these Fish out of cold water
Robert Hanson replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Yeah, not sure if we can assign blame to the Marlins struggles in N.Y. & Detroit on cold weather. Detroit was swept in Minnesota prior to their series against the Marlins. However, both they and the Yankees are favorites to win their division. Would not assign credit to the Marlins playing at home for their 5-1 start. The fact that they played Colorado & the White Sox had a lot to do with that. Bottom line, we’re still not sure how good (or bad) the Marlins are just yet. Gonna need a bigger sample size. -

Marlins to call up Deyvison De Los Santos
Robert Hanson replied to Kevin Barral's topic in Marlins Minor League Talk
I have 4 of the right handed bats — DDLS, Heriberto, Sanoja, & Slater — on the bench. I have 3 of the right handed bats — Gus, Norby, & Otto — in the starting lineup along with Xavier and all 5 left handed bats. -
1. The most interesting move was signing Christopher Morel & attempting to make him a 1st baseman. 2. Graham Pauley will be the most significantly improved player. 3. I would focus on signing Sandy Alcantara to a long term extension. 4. The Marlins biggest strength is left hand hitting outfielders. Their biggest weakness is 1st base. 5. The Marlins will finish 76-86. Otto Lopez will be the team MVP.

What are your Marlins vs. Rockies series predictions?
Robert Hanson replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
The Marlins win 2 out of 3. Jakob Marsee will be the series MVP. -
Was thinking that Pushard would be the one most likely returning, but not until after the season started. The Phillies rotation threw a lot of innings last year & their bullpen would be a good place to stash a rookie. Meanwhile, the Cardinals rotation is not good and can easily see them burning through relievers, forcing them to eventually return Pushard.

Once again, first base could be Marlins' biggest weakness
Robert Hanson replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
The biggest disappointment of the offseason was the Marlins not signing a legit 1st baseman. I understand they didn’t want to potentially block Deyvison’s path like they did when they signed T.A. and he blocked X’s path for half a season. The Marlins could’ve easily signed Rhys Hoskins, who signed a minor league deal with Cleveland that pays 1.5m if he makes the O.D. roster. Even if he can no longer produce offensively, he can field his position. 1st base shouldn’t be treated like a dumping ground for players who don’t have a position, which is exactly what it is right now. The Marlins will suffer not only offensively, but they’ll suffer defensively too.- 7 replies

Phillies extend former Marlin Luzardo on $135 million deal
Robert Hanson replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Other Baseball
IMO, after losing Ranger to the Red Sox, the Phillies felt compelled to get Jesus under contract, long term. Not sure what the Phillies have, starting pitching wise, in AA or AAA. Based on this contract, probably not much. -
I’ll go with Ely & say that Caissie isn’t a lock to make the O.D. roster. Unlike Ely, I’m not going with Estuery. Instead, I’ll go with a mild upset and pick Mack, out of the gate, to make the O.D. roster. I have Mack starting at catcher, Agustin starting at DH, & Conine in right, the first time the Marlins face a right hander, after the season starts. I have Mack and Conine taking advantage of Agustin, Hicks, & Caissie, respectively, wandering off to play in the WBC. Can’t disagree with any pitching projections, though Braxton isn’t a lock, yet. Need to see more from him. He has started a season in the bullpen (2023). Entered the rotation the 2nd time through when Cueto took a 💩. I also have Bachar in the bullpen (sorry Ely)…..

Strictly based on the rosters of their teams & not their performances, would say that Pushard is more likely to be returning than McCambley. The Cardinals rotation is not good and could easily see them burning through bullpen arms and as a result, be forced to return Pushard. On the other end of the spectrum, Phillies starters led MLB in I.P. last year. They seem better equipped to stash a reliever on their MLB roster, which gives McCambley a better shot at sticking. The Phillies did lose Ranger S. to the Sawx, so this could affect those I.P. numbers for their starters.

Wasn’t considering Mazur as a starting pitching candidate for the O.D. roster. As of now, it’s looking like Sandy, Eury, Meyer, & Paddack for four of the spots. Was thinking the 5th spot would be a Battle Royale between Braxton & Junk, however he’s fallen behind with the ankle injury. Will be interesting to see how Mazur does in his next outing. If he continues on this course, could make things interesting.

Could Joe Mack force Marlins' hand this spring?
Robert Hanson replied to Louis Addeo-Weiss's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
It’s still early in spring training. We’ll see what happens over the next 3 weeks. Would the Marlins keep 3 catchers on the 26 man roster whenever Mack makes it to MLB?? Doesn’t seem as likely as last year, though injuries and poor performances do happen. Hard to envision the diminutive Hicks (5’9” at best) playing much 1st base. When Mack does get called up (if he doesn’t make the O.D. roster), he has to play. Not getting called up to sit the bench.- 3 replies

Will evaluate this trade in 3 years. Speaking of 3 years, it was 2023 when Ng traded Garrett Cooper, who’s now retired, & Sean Reynolds, who will be playing in Japan this year, for Weathers so I grade this as a W for the Marlins. Taking a trip down memory lane, I recall thinking the Arraez trade to S.D. was a bad trade. In light of Marsee’s limited success and the fact that Arraez is now a f.a., advantage Marlins, despite the fact that Marsee finished the season in a 2-26 slump.

Unfortunately, first base continues to be a dumping ground for the Marlins, with it being the place where players go who don’t have a position. I like the idea of having a first baseman who’s actually a first baseman. Surely, the Marlins look at the metrics and see that run prevention provided by a top defensive first baseman is as valuable, if not more, than a player who provides more offensive output but is a defensive liability. Would have loved to see the Marlins sign O’Hearn, but I get it that they don’t want to block Devison’s path with a multi year contract. Found the “there were also concerns about him off the field as well” comment, interesting.
