Marlins trade Jake Burger to Rangers for prospect package

Burger figured to be among the first to go. The return of multiple MI was a little surprising, but neither figures to actually play for the big league club. You can never have too many southpaws. -
Also of note: Alcantara to Twins for Royce Lewis.

A fan posted this trade on baseballtrade site. Braxton Garrett and Anthony Bender to Yankees for Jasson Dominguez. I think the Marlin side is a little light, but Dominguez is the kind of player you gamble on. Also saw an Alcantara for Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu proposal. I'd actually take that deal.

Considering years of remaining control, committed salary, age, health, etc., I would guess that Weathers has the most current trade value among Miami starters. He's at least somewhat comparable to Garrett Crochet, who is getting lots of trade discussion.

What is a Rogers-like haul really? Stowers is DFA material and Norby went steeply south as soon as the competition got familiar with him. Cabrera has great potential and should only be moved for similar upside.

Pitching, speed and defense keep a team competitive. Alcantara, Luzardo, Cabrera, Weathers and Garrett are a nice starting five for 2025, but how many of them will actually be able to pitch come opening day? Meyer, Fulton, Snelling, and Mazur may be good this year ... or not. Perez may come on strong ... or not. You could trade a few starters and add another three or four Norbys to the lineup, but that wouldn't improve anything. The perfect time to trade a pitcher was to move Alcantara right after his Cy Young year and new contract. Oh, well. Perfect times to improve through the draft have been thoroughly botched. The last draft by Bendix was maybe the worst in franchise history. Instead of relying on paid scouts to make decisions, the owner should just take the highest ranked player on the board from Fangraphs, Just Baseball or whoever with each pick.

And yes, the Boyd and Montas contracts are ridiculous. Ryan Weathers is looking better than either of those guys. Maybe he could get us Royce Lewis.

Teams will need rotation pieces even more desperately come late spring training. Luzardo, Garrett, Alcantara, and others will be able to demonstrate their effectiveness coming off injury. If the Twins want to flip Royce Lewis for Luzardo right now, however, I'd make that deal. I'd even throw in Adam Mazur.

Kevin, are the Marlin new manager and bench coach fluent in Spanish? Didn't see that in any news article. If so, great. If not, WTH! What kind of team culture would that promote?

Can we assume that Vitale has picked up the ability to speak fluent Spanish over the years? Can we assume the same about the manager? Hard to imagine any manager/coach not being bilingual.

Best way to get the trade proposal theme going is to project the trade value of players in the Miami organization. Baseball trade value site does a rather poor all around job, but with one redeeming factor: the trades that actually take place are nearly always in line with projections. So, let's start by naming maybe the top ten Marlins in terms of what they can bring back.

Norby struck out about 40 times in September alone. Opposing teams figured him out pretty quickly. And he's a minuis glove no matter where you put him. Stowers, who came over from Baltimore with him, is a DFA candidate.

Ely, could you and/or staff put together a list of Miami player trade value? That's about the most pertinent subject right now. The most underrated might be Ryan Weathers.

If Kikuchi got $63 million for 3 years, what would the much younger Ryan Weathers get in free agency right now (if he was eligible)? Five years and $150 million?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Everything you suggested seems doable certainly, but the end result is a shite team. It's a darned shame that our best bet in the OF is Jesus Sanchez, who may not produce even average numbers. The one thing I have to point out is that Otto Lopez owns second base. His defense there was Gold Glove caliber. He can hit and run. (Edwards and he led the Marlins in WAR last season!) I would trade Burger, Norby and maybe Bride, if I could. Weathers is a valuable trade piece, but only for a can't miss return.

Troy Johnston is currently a better bat than De Los Santos (vastly better in DWL this year). I don't see De Los Santos making any kind of significant contribution in the majors - or Johnston for that matter. Maybe the Marlins could make him part of a trade package for a real difference-maker.

More on the above: You don't trade a star hurler like Gallen (indirectly) for three Yankee prospects who are very long shots to be major league regulars.

Ely, I noticed your post on the Royce Lewis trade earlier today. I think the key to getting him from Minnesota (I have often dreamed of getting Lewis) would be Ryan Weathers, who came on strong last season. Weathers and Ramirez, not Mack. I am very disappointed in the package Marlins received for Jazz. Somehow, some way, the Marlins needed to capture Dominguez from the Yankees in that deal. Dominguez and Lewis, health risks that they are, have the potential to turn the Marlins offense around.
