Offishial News: Marlins protect 3 prospects; TV revenue stays 'effectively the same'

Today's news roundup also highlights players on the 2025 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot who have Marlins connections.

On Tuesday, the Marlins selected prospects 1B Deyvison De Los Santos, INF Jared Serna and LHP Dax Fulton to their 40-man roster, protecting them from potentially getting picked in next month's MLB Rule 5 Draft. No corresponding moves were necessary as the club had three vacancies on the 40-man.

The Marlins will have the third overall pick in the Rule 5. MLB Pipeline lists the top-rated prospects from each organization who were left unprotected.

🔷 The most detailed article yet from Fish On First intern Sean McCormack identifies which types of players fit best at loanDepot park.

🔷 Fish Unfiltered is back! Kevin Barral, Isaac Azout and I react to Clayton McCullough's introductory press conference, the latest roster moves and Marlins minor league free agent signings.

🔷 Also embedded below, I made a guest appearance on the Bullpen Mafia Podcast. Our wide-ranging conversation covered everything from Agustín Ramírez to Harold Ramírez.

🔷 There are 28 names on the 2025 BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot. Former Marlins Ichiro Suzuki, Hanley Ramírez, Curtis Granderson and Fernando Rodney are each entering their first year of eligibility, while Mark Buehrle is entering his fifth year. Ichiro will clear the 75% threshold for election without a sweat—the only question is whether or not he gets in unanimously.

🔷 Confirming reporting from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred tells The Athletic's Evan Drellich that the Marlins' renegotiated deal with FanDuel Sports Network Florida includes "effectively the same" revenue as their original local television deal did. It is not a long-term commitment, however. All of the MLB teams still affiliated with Diamond Sports Group have deals that expire "no later than 2028" as the league plans for the possibility of creating a national package for streaming companies to bid on.

🔷 The Marlins announced that their annual Home Plate Meals Thanksgiving Distribution will be held on November 22. Peter Bendix, Clayton McCullough, Nick Fortes, Anthony Bender and Jeff Conine are scheduled to be there.

🔷 Congratulations to Declan Cronin and Paige Monaghan on their engagement!

🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Rays traded José Siri to the Mets for right-handed reliever Eric Orze. Reds RHP Nick Martinez was the only free agent to accept the $21.05M qualifying offer. The other 12 players who declined the offer are now tied to draft-pick compensation if they sign with a new team. Stephen Vogt won AL Manager of the Year and Pat Murphy won NL Manager of the Year

As always, so much information for the Fish Followers. Appreciate it.

I heard that Siri wasn't popular, so a trade seemed imminent.

The "even" money television deal is narrowly good to hear, but the lack of a long-term commitment contributes even more to the already high reluctance to commit to ostensibly affordable free agents.

Nick Martinez at S21m. I guess it was a crapshoot, especially for the Reds. It will, of course, be another miscalculation because baseball is afraid of its own shadows. Groupthink and fear of loss rule the roost.

The Fish seem to always have short term deals with TV networks. Along with in person attendance, the number of households in South Florida that tune in to watch their games needs improvement.

From the list of former Marlins being HOF eligible, I'd say the only lock is Ichiro. I'd be surprised if he weren't selected unanimously. His first 11 seasons couldn't have gone any better for a player with Hall of Fame ambitions. Unfortunately, the other former Marlins listed don't really have the numbers worthy for the Hall.

I can maybe see Hanley Ramirez eclipse the 5% threshold, but I don't see him lasting past the second ballot. He had a 5-year run where he was consistently among the league's best. That might be just enough to allow him to not be a one-and-done. But the others? Yeah, no shot.

I can remember when Marlins had good tv rating.  My understanding Marlins will never be over 12th in tv rating out of all teams .    That won't happen again till more south states without mlb team start to carry them.    from my years of watching .

I saw how the lighter, short-term deals really hurt the Expos over the years. It retarded planning and fan base growth - both of which exacerbated the team's narrow windows of opportunity.  I suppose it is the proverbial Catch-22 for low-revenue teams. It seems inevitable that the next CBA will result in another work stoppage because the owners must defend the developmental system, or low-revenue teams have no chance. The alternative is to increase the CBT significantly. Of course, the MLBPA have their own ideas.
