Offishial News for 9/10/24

On Monday, Marlins batters struck out 14 times, with nine of those coming against Pirates rookie phenom Paul Skenes. However, Xavier Edwards, Jesús Sánchez and Otto Lopez each went 2-for-4 at the plate and Valente Bellozo (5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 91 pitches/57 strikes) kept the game within reach. A ninth-inning rally against Aroldis Chapman came up just short. The Marlins lost, 3-2.

Here's more Marlins news and content:

🔷 Congrats to Jesús Luzardo on being the Marlins nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. Jorge Soler was their nominee last year. The award is is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Luzardo has shown his dedication to South Florida by participating in fantasy camps hosted by the Marlins Foundation, regularly visiting local schools and hospitals, and launching his own foundation, seeking to "empower and uplift children from undeserved communities." Vote for Luzardo here through September 29.

🔷 Soon after the MLB regular season ends, international winter ball leagues get underway! As announced by their respective teams on Monday, Marlins RHP Austin Roberts has signed with Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) and INF Johnny Olmstead is committed to Senadores de San Juan in Puerto Rico (LBPRC). In the meantime, Roberts and Olmstead are finishing out their MiLB campaigns with Triple-A Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola, respectively.

🔷 Happy 23rd birthday to Agustín Ramírez. Acquired by the Marlins in the Jazz Chisholm trade, Ramírez is slashing .263/.354/.478 with a 127 wRC+, 23 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season (most of that coming with the Yankees organization). Fish On First's fourth-ranked prospect, he should be getting very serious consideration to crack the 2025 Opening Day roster.

🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Guardians rookie Joey Cantillo came seven outs shy of throwing a perfect game against the White Sox, who are now up to 112 losses. Kody Clemens had a walk-off RBI single for the Phillies. The Twins lost their fourth in a row and now have only a three-game cushion for the American League's final Wild Card spot. The Yankees called up top prospect Jasson Dominguez.

🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Adam Oller) will continue to seek their first head-to-head win against the Pirates this season. The home team will go with a Carmen Mlodzinski-led bullpen game. The Marlins have a 36.2% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 6:40 p.m. ET.

🔷 Today's MiLB schedule:

  • Triple-A Jacksonville at Charlotte, 6:35 p.m. ET
  • Double-A Pensacola vs. Montgomery, 7:05 p.m. ET
