There is a persistent call on Yankee chats for Jeter to join the team's front office. As the fan base is not enamored with Cashman or Fishman, one suspects that joining the front office really means becoming GM. This is despite Cashman's contract extension and the team bringing on Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean. Perhaps, given Jeter's on-field success, it is not surprising that Yankees fans (although not Steinbrenner, it seems) think Jeter is smart and savvy enough to be a GM of the Yankees. Jeter's recent comments about making a blockbuster trade and other so-called common-sense moves have stoked the fires as the team fell out of wild card contention on the last day prior to the break. The New York fans ascribe all the blame for Jeter's short and unsuccessful stint in Miami to Sherman. Amazingly different perceptions emanating from the two fanbases.

Good and he can take that wonderful, sweet, fun-loving Gary Denbo with him. Oh and his favorite Cuban player is now available, I am sure he can swing a trade with Kim for VVM.

From what I can tell, part of the disconnect comes from the coverage of Jeter's Marlins split. Some of his friends in the NY media used the slant that he exited on his own volition because Sherman wouldn't increase payroll enough for his liking, making it sound like it was IMPOSSIBLE to succeed under those circumstances.

Well Sherman clearly did not spend enough for Jeter's liking or any of the fans for that matter. But Jeter was the author of Project Wolverine that projected rising revenue from attendance, TV and sponsorships, even after selling off the best players and publicly attacking fans. Couple that with the fact that his talent evaluation and development team were failures with key players like Brinson and VVM. Those were the circumstances and it was IMPOSSIBLE to succeed under them but they were created by Derek Jeter.

Jeter may not have known this based on his high school education, but if your revenue is well below target, your expenses have to be too. Expensive lesson learned - $4 mil X 4 years = $16 mil. Sherman just paid for the world's most expensive MBA.

And by the way why would Steinbrenner want to hire a subordinate with a history of trashing his employer for his own failings. No one needs that.
