We learned a lot from the Braves series.

First, the Marlins have made amazing progress this year led by Skip and Kim, but they are no where near being contenders. It will take a few years to do that. Unfortunatley, per the Marlins announcers yesterday, the Braves have their roster under contract for the next five years.

Eury is still a nervous kid who will take a few years to become a full fledged, confident major leaguer. We all know he has the talent to be a great pitcher. But he suffered an attack of nerves in Atlanta after seeing the Braves maul Hoeing the day before. The only young pitcher with confidence was Jose, and we all now know that was cocaine induced.

Third, no reason to give up anyone good at the trading deadline for a rental just to make it one round into the playoffs and then get slaughtered by the Braves again. Keep your eyes on the prize Kim, the World Series. Keep our prospects like Meyers (who is rumored to be on the block) and lets keep the post-Jeter rebuild going now that its working.

The other thing we have learned this year is that the fans will come out given an exciting, winning team. Pre road trip weekend we had over 20k fans per game and we are just in our first year of a rebuild. Sustained winning should really bring em in after a few years. The younger generation are Fish fans, even if their parents still root for their old teams like the Mutts. An additonal 20k fans per home game at $50 per head (includes merch, F&B and parking) yields $80 mil which is enough to add a few more bats and put some more shekels in Bruce's iron wallet.

But it's a 4-game series! You want a 4-0 sweep or 3-1?

There ought to be some balance between the present and future, yes. But I'm not opposed to doing what it requires to get an impactful rental if it addresses one of their weakest positions, like Gomes at C or Candelario at 3B, especially if it's somebody they could realistically re-sign.
