As expected, the Miami Marlins announced on Friday that they have picked up Sandy Alcantara's $21M club option for the 2027 season.

Alcantara signed a five-year, $56M extension with the Marlins in 2022. This option represents the end of that contract. Barring a trade, it will mark the highest single-season salary that the club has ever paid an active player.

Alcantara, 31, is set to enter his 10th season with the Marlins and his ninth separate season making a regular season appearance (he missed all of 2024 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery). Only Luis Castillo had a tenure of equal length with the organization.

This past season, Alcantara pitched to a 3.87 ERA, 4.08 FIP, 6.43 K/9 and 2.48 BB/9 in 214 innings pitched, which led all of Major League Baseball. During the span of his extension, he has won the 2022 National League Cy Young Award and posted a 3.80 ERA, 3.80 FIP, 7.3 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 802 innings pitched while throwing an MLB-high 10 complete games.

Also, Alcantara owns the franchise records for career innings pitched, starts and strikeouts.

Picking up the option was a no-brainer. Miami's alternative would have been to pay a $2M buyout to Alcantara, making him a free agent.

Along with Alcantara, the current projected Marlins Opening Day starting rotation for 2027 includes Eury Pérez, Max Meyer, Janson Junk and Tyler Phillips.
