These are the types of moves the Marlins should be making. They have a great record but a negative run differential (thanks entirely to the Braves). But the Braves are the measuring stick in the division. Clearly we can’t compete yet. The Marlins should look at flipping their pending free agents and older players (Wendle, Berti, Cooper, Gurriel), relievers (Okert, Floro, Barnes) and trimming some fat from their 40 man (Jerar, Burdick) for young players with team control (like CES) or be flipped for more productive big leaguers. Thankfully guys like Amaya, Edwards, Dane Meyers are already in the org and can replace some of the outgoing talent. We need to see what these players are like as big leaguers to assess needs going forward.

I think the 2023 Marlins look like the 2021 Seattle Mariners: good record, but likely over achieved. The front office was aggressive that off-season. Seattle is in a great spot now and lengthened their competitive window. If the Marlins stand pat, we’re looking at a one year window with Soler and the above mentioned vets leaving for nothing in return or stretching the budget that can’t be stretched thanks to Avi and Segura. Remaining dollars should be used on extending Arraez, Eury, Jazz. The Marlins have to operate like the Rays: trade the vets for young talent and keep the waves coming.
