I have to ask, "Why not?" bring Alfaro back. No downside and you never know. Maybe there is a September walk-off tater in the bat! He instantly goes to the top of the wild hair rankings, to boot.

No downside, other than some hurt feelings for Austin Allen. He's been a terrific hitter in Triple-A from May onward. Wouldn't say Alfaro is a clear defensive upgrade over him, either.

I agree. I thought Ng would acquire a catcher at the deadline, but I guess Alfaro will do. I like Fortes but he is not a consistent hitter. I hope that Banfield and Mack can pan out.

This move just screams desperation to me.

 

They know how awful he is and they bring him back, albeit on a minor league deal.

 

Yeah, I get that they have essentially no internal options if Fortes/Stallings go down to injury, but ask me, how is Alfaro any better? I'd almost rather see Paul McIntosh before I ever see Alfaro again, even with McIntosh's defensive liability.

It does seem to be an indictment on McIntosh. Entering the season, it was plausible to think he'd contribute in the majors this season. Simply didn't hit quite as well as hoped after the promotion. I think it's reasonable to bet on Alfaro over him in the current moment. Still a lousy situation for the team to be in. No good solutions.
