The Edward Cabrera conundrum persists
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Louis Addeo-Weiss's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
There is hardly worth repeating ourselves over this fellow. Is there a more frustrating individual who is still on the team?- 2 replies

Marlins vs. Phillies series preview & predictions
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Fish On First Staff's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Sorry that I missed the prediction response. Although it doesn't matter or count, I was thinking sweep and Burger as MVP. Never disrespect a streak, as they say! A split would be ok, especially after the Bellozo performance. Now, Cabrera, it's time to build on that excellent outing of your own. -
Miami Marlins game notes for August 13, 2024
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
I was encouraged a bit by Stower's ABs, especially the line drive single and the bomb to center, while caught, was the product of a solid swing. He's working his way back to form, now with contact. Hits will follow if Schumaker leaves him in. That appears to be the team's thinking anyway. -
Nobody else in the majors is pitching like Valente Bellozo
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
I must admit to an instant connection to Bellozo. He appears to be genuinely thankful and thoroughly enjoying the MLB experience. To boot, he recalls the pitching craftsmanship that goes beyond the obligatory elbow-destroying velocity in today's game. Wasn't the soft contact inducement inning after inning just an absolute pleasure to watch? All those soft pop-ups. The few hits were spaced out and the scoring opportunities for the Phillies were lithely maneuvered. So, while we await the "league catching on to him," or anything similar, let's enjoy this fresh air in baseball we have on our team.- 3 replies

Marlins win finale in literal game of inches
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Louis Addeo-Weiss's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
Add me to the "never saw that before" list. That's our (not nearly as important) version of the NFL "tuck rule" game! LOL.- 1 reply

I mentioned on X that I am fine with the Padres doing well - all of our old friends on the team and they are a fine counterweight to the Dodgers. Of course, if the D-backs repeat, that is fine. I suppose it's anyone except the Dodgers, even grudgingly accepting the Phillies or Braves while holding my nose! World Series rings for Arraez, Scott, and Hoeing (along with the first Padres franchise championship) would be a nice ending to this season of woe.

Edward Cabrera may have turned a corner
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Alex Krutchik's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
It was a fantastic outing for Cabrera that gives everyone hope that the corner is indeed turned this time. If so, he is either a strong staffer for 2025 or has a big trade value pickup for the team. I applaud Schumaker for extending him as far as he could go this time. It has to be a tremendous confidence boost for him and the team.- 2 replies

Marlins battle all day, fall short yet again in extras
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Nate Karzmer's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
I really enjoyed the series this weekend, with credit to the Marlins for their resiliency. This is a hot and superior Padres team, that got all they wanted from the Marlins. The Padres leave with the series win but realize they could have easily lost it. Kudos also to Schumaker, who finally has decided to extend the starters and see their mettle. Since the wins or losses mean very little, the overall evaluative aspect of the rest of the season is paramount.- 2 replies

Marlins ride Cabrera, six-run fourth to upset Braves
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Louis Addeo-Weiss's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
My thoughts: Much better than the usual </= 5 innings from Cabrera. He still had the high pitch count, but even the Braves announcers commented on his pitch movement, and they understood why the Marlins wanted to go as far as they could with him. It's the "When/if he puts it all together"...etc. Pache: The bonehead delay advancing to second, but to his credit, returned with a solid contribution for the day, including the outfield throw in the sequence that nailed Soler at the plate. Bride: Nothing like a three-run homer. Nothing sweeter than beating the Braves at their place. -

Marlins' woes at Truist Park continue
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Nate Karzmer's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
No argument about the Braves' high-end talent, but it can go south very quickly. With five or six long-term deals in place, that is exponentially damaging if they don't win. It's one thing to have a horrendous contract on the books like Rendon, Glen Davis, Strasburg, Miguel Cabrera, or Stanton, but four or five on the downside simultaneously? We can only hope their current edition is like the 1990s version. All that regular season success and one title. Same for the Dodgers. Winning lots of regular season games and a playoff game or two are not going to satisfy their fans whatsoever. I also agree that drafting and development are the only solutions for low-income teams.- 3 replies

Bellozo pitched well, I love his enthusiasm, and fundamentally disagree with Schumaker. What the hell is the problem with letting Bellozo go longer in a season like this? Sixty-six pitches, for crying out loud. These guys will never test their mettle and improve as long starters. Moreover, with a less seasoned bullpen, the team needs to take advantage of an opportunity to extend the starters even more.

Thank you again for the in-depth content. Most of us (apparently, including Craig Mish) rely on FOF coverage of prospects coming to the team.

Marlins' woes at Truist Park continue
THOMAS JOSEPH replied to Nate Karzmer's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
How unbelievable will it be if the Mets finish second in the division? Cracks in my Montreal dog's (Anthopoulus) lock-them-in strategy? Couldn't be - has to be the injuries and not the risk of signing five guys to long-term deals at the same time. Dare we hope the whole strategy isn't viable and hamstrings the Braves for the rest of the decade? Nah.- 3 replies
