    I have to echo the sentiment that trading Cabrera now would be a mistake. They would not only be selling painfully low on him, but in doing so, they're throwing away what little starting pitching depth they have left. Best to just trot him out and see what they get out of him, and demote him into the bullpen if he continues walking 6.0 BB/9. I understand that they can only put up with him walking the farm for so long, but 100 mph FBs and 97 mph changeups, both with excellent movement, don't grow on trees. Furthermore, the last thing we need is yet another player with no pop at the plate. Liover and Nick Gonzales I can maybe understand attracting to Miami, but when we already have Luis Arraez and Xavier Edwards, we don't need another Magneuris Sierra-type player. Hard no to Bae.

    It has to be on the Trade Deadline. The Marlins are foolish to think they're competitive with this roster, but they currently think they are.

    Same. I honestly thought he was going to be snatched up much sooner too, as he didn't have a QO attached to him. I guess he and his agent were looking for around $50 million, and had to settle on $42 million because no team wanted to pay that much for a guy as defensively limited as he is.

    I mean, we're probably not going to hear about it until he's no longer under contract for us. But that is something we should probably follow.

    I'm thinking Meyer starts the season in AAA to make up for the missed time from Tommy John and get the reps he needs, and ramp him up for a role in the Marlins roster. Maldonado has been in AAA long enough. He'd be the guy that gets added to the OD Roster.

    If VVM's willing to make a tweet like that in open public, then I'm definitely curious about what happened under the hood. I mean, the team paid $5 million for him to put up non-competitive statlines, and he ragequit midway through last season because he wasn't being given playtime to go bat under 2 bucks, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if what happened is serious enough.

    I made this post in another topic, but decided that here was the better thread for it. Nick Gordon is... okay, I guess. He's one year removed from a decent season in 2022 (111 wRC+), showing surprising pop for a guy at his stature, and he's a capable defender in CF, though his arm leaves a bit to be desired. The thing I'm most concerned about is that he only walked once in 93 PA last year. That can't fly at the MLB level and that needs to change if he's going to stick in the lineup. You could plug him as a second baseman, but Luis Arraez is there, and when Arraez is traded, Xavier Edwards is there too. I'm just surprised they got anything out of Okert. He was a walking ticking time bomb last year. It says something about how empty the offseason has been, when the best transaction the Marlins have made is one I have a lukewarm reception to.

    It's an okay pickup, I guess. It's better than the other transactions the Marlins have made this offseason, but that's not exactly a high bar to surpass.

    I'll have to respectfully disagree here. Burdick has always had alarming swing-and-miss problems even before 2023. In 2023 they just became significantly worse. I'm not sure that calling a guy that, before 2023, was always hovering around 28-29 K% (in the minors, mind), had limited range and mobility, and doesn't play any premium positions a "flawed player that could do enough in other areas to still be helpful" would apply here. Maybe I'm lower on him than some people here, but I wouldn't think a player like Peyton Burdick (who mind, is getting up there in age) would move the needle much more than a random Corner OF/1B type player that the Marlins could call up instead.

    Burdick being DFA'd doesn't come as a surprise. Sure, Burdick had huge power, but that power doesn't translate well in the majors if you consistently have a 35%+ strikeout rate in the minors. Then you look at his defensive profiling, and it's easy to see why the Marlins decided to cut bait. I'm not sure what the Marlins see in Darren McCaughan, though. He's an 88 mph meatball chef that hasn't had a standout minor league season since 2018. He only really serves as minor league filler -- a guy you have zero plans of inserting into the major league roster and is only really there to plug holes in the minor league roster. And yet, he's given a 40 man roster spot, because... reasons. So really, this transaction comes out as lose-lose for the Marlins.

    Honestly... none of those talent evaluators are wrong. After Thomas White, our prospect stock fell off a cliff. You can attribute that to bad scouting and a bad development staff that, for some reason, we kept around for 6 years. I'm hoping Peter Bendix, Vinesh Kanthan, and Rachel Balkovec do a better job with those roles than their predecessors did because the job their predecessors did was dreadfully awful. I've got nothing against D. J. Svihlik and Adrian Lorenzo, but they should never be anywhere near a Front Office executive job after what they did to the Marlins.

    The Orioles trade is never going to happen. They have a three-headed monster in the rotation with Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez, and Kyle Bradish. Not to mention they have servicable Dean Kremer and Tyler Wells in the 4-5th slots, with John Means as a possible spot starter should any of them go down to injury. Getting Luzardo is nowhere close to being a priority now that they have acquired Corbin Burnes.

    We have the lowly A's signing major league deals. Meanwhile, the only thing we have to look forward to is a minor league deal with a guy well past his prime. Yay.

    If this is the return Corbin Burnes gets, then I don't see the Marlins doing any significant trades involving their pitching. Get ready for yet another season of tire-spinning.

    If the Marlins were competing, they'd gamble on Tim Anderson. It'd make more sense signing a guy in the twilight in their career like Elvis Andrus, if the Marlins were signaling a rebuild like Louis suggests.

    So they're taking the "quality over quantity" approach this year. The other way around hasn't worked for the previous 6 years so it's refreshing that they're trying something different instead of doubling down on something that hasn't worked for them. Still remains to be seen whether it'll work out for them. We're relying on them actually developing these players, which is something they have been generationally bad at for years now. Balkovec was hired to hopefully fix this problem. At this point, anything could be better than what the Quartet of Svihlik, Denbo, Lorenzo, and DeGroot had done up to this point, but because this is the Marlins, I could be proven wrong at any time.

    Thanks. I've been an active commenter since FishStripes in 2019, and a Marlins fan since '96. I have very cynical views regarding this team, though. I say they don't do this trade, but I've seen them do generational lopsided trades before (with them on the hilariously bad end), so sadly I can't count the idea out.

    Not gonna happen. I'm not even sure they should pull the trigger even if Royce Lewis was included.
