Make no mistake - the Marlins got four players from the Padres in the Arraez deal, but they are paying his salary only because they wanted Jakob Marsee, the AFL MVP last fall. Why not want that pedigree? Other recent MVPs of that league were Acuna Jr., Royce Lewis, Kris Bryant, Heston Kjerstad and Gleyber Torres. Still, the only way they got Marsee was because he is in the midst of an awful start in AA this year. The Marlins were willing to gamble.

Let the trading begin. There are no sacred names on the current Marlins roster and shouldn't be. How about Jazz Chisholm to Cincinnati for Noelvi Marte? Marte won't be available until the 80th day of the season because of a failed drug test, but he would instantly become the face of the Marlins franchise. And then there is Orelvis Martinez up in Toronto. The offensively challenged Jays could use a bat like Jake Burger and maybe a reliever like Scott. With Marte and Martinez in the IF, the Marlins suddenly look interesting.

Moving Jazz would instantly open up CF and the leadoff spot to Victor Mesa Jr.  I was low on Mesa for a couple years, but he has grown into a genuine prospect. Love that he takes walks.

When I pointed to Mesa Jr. as the next Marlins leadoff hitter, I forgot about Xavier Edwards. Out of sight and out of mind thus far. It should be remembered that Edwards was phenomenal at Jacksonv iille last season. .351, .429, and .886. And how about 52 walks and only 30 whiffs. Hopefully he'll overcome his strange foot infection and take over at 2b and the top of the order soon.

I'd like to think that Edwards could actually be an upgrade over Arraez, given a better defensive profile and tremendous speed. Yes, I'll admit to having an extreme position on that.

Injured list Jasson Dominguez is another option for the Marlins. He would require a short-stack of major leaguers going the other way, including a revitalized Luzardo, maybe Nardi, and possibly Ryan Weathers. Or maybe the Yankees would like to have Jazz patrolling CF.
