Behind scoreless Luzardo outing and more late-inning offense, Marlins now tied for second-best record in NL.BOSTON—From being without a hit through seven innings to sweeping a three-game series against the Red Sox for the first time in franchise history. What a rollercoaster of emotions. Let's break it down. Prior to the game, both Garrett Cooper and Yuli Gurriel were scratched from the lineup—Cooper with an undisclosed illness, and Gurriel after taking a ground ball to the face during early work. Skip Schumaker said after the game that Gurriel did not break any bones and should be alright. He is considered day-to-day. Luis Arraez started the game at first base in their absences. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/29/ae4f06c0-ba51da30-b4588101-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4Both starting pitchers had their good stuff going from the jump, with Jesús Luzardo retiring 17 straight batters after allowing a hit and a walk in the first. He recorded nine strikeouts before allowing two hits in the top of the seventh and handed the ball to certified firefighter Andrew Nardi. Nardi got a strikeout and a lineout to add to his basket of inherited runners stranded. Luzardo's final line: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K, 99/70 P/S. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/29/25ee69bd-f3d87b84-b86fb96a-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/d5f7e3bd-ba22-4877-932c-2db400a8249d.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/b471247a-0724-494b-bc98-ecd95b8a3128.mp4The Marlins recorded their first hit of the game off Brayan Bello in the eighth inning when Jean Segura—yes, THAT Jean Segura—who was not in the lineup originally, grounded a ball up the middle that the shortstop could not make a play on. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/29/7a957423-4492c07d-ec336416-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4Joey Wendle followed with a single of his own and forced Alex Cora to take Brayan Bello out of the game. Jon Berti drove Jean home with a single up the middle to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/29/0e0643e5-18fa92b4-b5620e0a-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4Jesus Sanchez singled to load the bases, then Nick Fortes grounded into a 5-2-3 double play. All-Star Luis Arraez was intentionally walked to load the bases again, and Jorge Soler struck out swinging. He looked like he wanted to send his bat to the moon to end the inning. Tanner Scott worked around a leadoff infield single by Kiké Hernández that was originally ruled an error because it took an insane hop right in front of Jean Segura. He got Connor Wong to pop out on a bunt attempt and struck out the next two batters. Bryan De La Cruz led off the ninth with a base hit and was replaced by Jonathan Davis at first base. With Jazz at the plate, Davis was caught stealing. Jazz didn't care. He blasted a home run to dead center off Kenley Jansen. The first "good at-bat" Jazz said he had ever had against Jansen. 106.4 MPH, 36° LA, 414 FT, HR in 24/30 Ballparks. 2-0 Marlins. Jazz waved to the crowd as a chorus of boos rained down. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/29/a0405836-8da2e2a3-c467e9f1-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4 https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/b56cf40c-7d50-4719-a2e9-81245e9a107f.mp4With a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, Skip called upon his closer, A.J. Puk, to put a bow on the win. Two strikeouts and a flyout later, the ballgame was over, and the Marlins won, 2-0. "I mean, yeah, I feel like Boston's had a tough time against Miami lately," Luzardo joked after the game referring to the success of South Florida sports teams across other sports. Noah's Notes and What's NextWell, that was fun!The Marlins completed their 3rd road sweep and 5th overall this season. Jesus Luzardo has pitched 13.1 innings over his last two starts and hasn't allowed a run.Jazz Chisholm Jr. has hit a home run in 4 of his last 5 games.Joey Wendle recorded 8 hits across the 3-game series. Bryan De La Cruz extended his hitting streak to ten games. Now it's on to Atlanta to face the big bad Braves. Bryan Hoeing flew to Atlanta ahead of the team so he will be fully rested for the start on Friday. That's it from me in Beantown. I'm off to New York to go celebrate my brother's engagement with my family! Thank you for following along on this road trip. For one final time here in Boston, MA.'Til Tmrw!

After beating the brakes off the Red Sox pitchers on Tuesday, the Marlins looked to Braxton Garrett to lock up a series win in Beantown. Three hours and 50 minutes (including a rain delay) later, A.J. Puk notched a save in a 6-2 victory. Let's break it down. The Marlins jumped out to an early lead for the second game in a row as Garrett Cooper banged a ball off the top of Monster that was originally ruled in play but was then called a home run to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead to leadoff the second. 102.9 MPH, 34° LA, 404 ft, HR in 19/30 ballparks. https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/1efdb360-b5f0-4a42-b712-4754f9357f51.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/22072945-d6d1-422e-abef-9f83af1f036a.mp4It was a bullpen game for the Red Sox, so Nick Pivetta pitched scoreless frames in the third, fourth, and fifth. The Red Sox tied the game on Braxton Garrett's lone mistake; a hanging curveball to Rafael Devers found its way into the seats to make it a 1-1 game in the fourth. Then things got interesting. With the game tied in the top of the sixth inning and two Marlins' on base in the form of Jorge Soler and Bryan De La Cruz, Jazz worked his way to a 1-2 count before the skies opened up and lightning struck the area. Home plate umpire Dan Bellino said, "Enough of this," and called for the tarp to be brought out, officially putting the game in a rain delay. With the delay lasting over an hour, Skip had no choice but to call an end to Braxton Garrett's solid outing. Skip said that they intended to send Brax back out there for another inning had Mother Nature not intervened. His final line: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 66/43 P/S. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/28/468fe691-5c354bae-96845c5b-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/273a7fb9-c059-464e-a580-3ae69da6d32c.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/1669e2c6-ed12-4eea-982d-fa797d0b2dfe.mp4After an hour and 13-minute delay, Josh Winckowski struck out Jazz on one pitch, and then all hell broke loose. Garrett Cooper walked to load the bases, and with Jean Segura at the plate, Josh sent a pitch to the backstop, allowing all the runners to move up and giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Braxton Garrett was now in line for a win. https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/a5c05feb-6252-4df4-85dc-6ae6af522ebd.mp4Jean Segura then hit a high chopper that was booted by the second baseman, allowing two more runners to score to extend the lead to 4-1. "When you put the ball in play, good things happen," Schumaker said. The Marlins have done plenty of that lately with MLB's fourth-lowest strikeout rate during the month of June (18.9 K%). Skip went on to mention how much it means to his teammates when the hard work that Jean continues to put in every day finally pays off. They extended their lead in the top of the eighth when Jazz clobbered a solo home run to dead center field off Chris Murphy (Jazz's first homer against a lefty in 2023). 108.2 MPH, 27° LA, 439 ft. 5-1 Marlins. https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/18941401-32ca-49b6-806b-0a734e683b6f.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/815bbf1a-a564-460e-b654-5b38b2713e2f.mp4Huascar Brazoban pitched a scoreless sixth inning and handed the ball to Andrew Nardi with two outs and a runner on second base in the seventh inning. Nardi struck out the only batter he faced to end the inning and give way to Tanner Scott, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth. Luis Arraez drove home Joey Wendle in the top of the ninth with a groundout to short, and Skip gave Dylan Floro the nod for the bottom of the ninth to try and close this game out. After getting Rafael Devers to fly out for the first out, Floro allowed a run on three straight singles, which forced Skip to bring in his closer, A.J. Puk. He entered a save situation due to the tying run being in the on-deck circle. The game ended three pitches later as pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida grounded into an inning-ending double play. Marlins win 6-2. https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/5d02cfb1-b2c3-494a-81d0-5bd1ef94624f.mp4Noah's Notes and What's NextBraxton Garrett was the winning pitcher and now has a 4-2 record this season. A.J. Puk recorded his 12th save. Time of game: 2 hours, 37 minutes (1:13 delay, 3:50 total)Fourth straight win for the Marlins, who are 10-3 in their last 13. The Marlins led the Red Sox wire to wire in the opening game of their road trip.BOSTON—With a day off Monday after wrapping up a winning homestand against the Blue Jays and Pirates, the Marlins made their way up to Beantown for an interleague matchup with the Boston Red Sox. They jumped out to an early lead and never once looked back. A "get right" game in a multitude of ways. Let's break it down. The game began in a topsy-turvy way, with Luis Arraez striking out for the first time in 43 plate appearances. That was followed by Jorge Soler doing what Arraez does, bounce one up the middle for a base hit. Then, Bryan De La Cruz sent a ball the other way and into the Red Sox bullpen for a two-run home run. His ninth of the season to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead in the first. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/27/2c96d898-99fd23e0-4855140a-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/1478fbef-d972-478e-baec-762d83688dcd.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/12dab306-b22b-42c8-92a2-0f97ae240e35.mp4Jazz then doubled in his first at-bat off the IL and flew around third, and swiped the back corner of home plate on a single by Garrett Cooper. Even though he got a bad read on the ball, Alex Verdugo's arm was no match for Jazz's speed, and he said after the game that once he saw Jody Reed waving him around third, the run was all but scored. https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/e41a6528-c73a-4843-953e-c2c6c240cb24.mp4With the offense jumping out to an early lead, the only question remaining was whether Sandy could get back on track. It looked shaky in the first as back-to-back one-out doubles plated a run, but Sandy found his groove and started to look like he did last year. When he induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the bottom of the fourth inning, everyone knew that Sandy was back. He said that it's the best he's felt on the mound all year and that if he can provide these types of outings to a team that's already doing well, they are going to be "celebrating again" later on in the season. He twirled a gem here in Boston, allowing only one run in seven solid innings of work. His final line: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 95/65 P/S. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/27/d20b6e1a-c21ecc0a-db93b3c2-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/083ed3df-cc67-4b5f-b61d-e64918bc3cc6.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/b5548fe9-32cb-45b7-8cb6-adbe33eb7234.mp4So they won the game 3-1, right? Nope. Not even close. By the time Archie Bradley shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, the Marlins had their largest margin of victory in any road game this season, thanks to the offensive contributions detailed below. Noah's Notes and What's NextJoey Wendle went 4-for-4 with a walk. Three of the four hits didn't leave the infield and could've been ruled as errors, but a hit is a hit. Obviously, Sandy's performance was exactly what the doctor ordered. Jacob Stallings threw a runner out trying to steal second with a DART from behind the plate. This next one might shock you: Jean Segura hit a home run over the Green Monster! He went 2-for-5 in his first game off the IL.https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/27/d9394390-c1c3ab35-766cd811-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4Jazz went 3-for-4 with a HBP and two runs scored in his return from turf toe.Garrett Cooper went 3-for-5.Final Score: 10-1 MarlinsTime of game: 2 hours, 34 minutes.First time the Marlins are 12 games over .500 since 2009.First time the Marlins have won a game at Fenway Park since 2009.Today also marks the 20th anniversary of the Marlins losing 25-8 at Fenway Park. Revenge is sweet. It's Braxton Garrett vs. TBD on Wednesday as the Marlins look to go 13 games over .500. It's me on the coverage and recap again tomorrow! From Fenway Park in Boston, MA.'Til Tmrw!

Noah Berger interviews Marlins left-hander A.J. Puk. Puk takes us through his baseball journey, including the trade that brought him to Miami last offseason and the process of becoming the club's primary closer this season. Subscribe to the Fish On First YouTube channel to watch video versions of every What a Relief episode. Right before the start of Spring Training, the Marlins acquired Puk from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder JJ Bleday. The A's were going to give the former first-round draft pick another opportunity to earn a spot in their starting rotation, but Puk recognized that a move to Miami would mean relief work. "It would've been cool to start again," Puk says, "but at the same time, I enjoy coming out of the bullpen and over the years, just learning my mentality for becoming a bullpen pitcher." In 2023, Puk has been more effective than ever. He enters Tuesday with a career-best 3.09 ERA, 2.79 FIP and 1.11 WHIP. The 28-year-old leads the Marlins with 11 saves converted. Modifying his traditional slider into a sweeper, he's avoiding the barrel of his opponents and inducing far more weak contact. The Marlins have even created a special entrance for Puk whenever he pitches at LoanDepot Park: Follow Noah (@Trainboy100) and Fish On First (@FishOnFirst) on Twitter. Bending the What a Relief rules, Noah Berger interviews Marlins "hybrid" right-hander Bryan Hoeing. Hoeing reflects on his lifelong love of baseball, the impact of pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. and catcher Nick Fortes, his improvement from 2022 to 2023, adapting to the pitch clock and more. Subscribe to the Fish On First YouTube channel to watch video versions of every What a Relief episode. Although 21 of Hoeing's first 25 MLB appearances have come out of the bullpen, he is temporarily filling a starting rotation spot for the Marlins. Hoeing went four scoreless innings against the Blue Jays on Monday with a career-high five strikeouts. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/19/04b675e8-bef21eff-5bba1bc2-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4Since returning to the majors on April 25, Miami has used Hoeing in a wide variety of situations. He has been the only Marlin to pitch on four consecutive days (May 24-27). Hoeing will make his next start on Saturday against the Pirates. Coming off of yet another comeback victory and looking for their fifth straight victory, the Marlins sent Jesus Luzardo to the mound to face off against ageless wonder, Zack Greinke. After going blow for blow in keeping the other teams scoreless, Luzardo ended up out-dueling the 39-year-old. Jesus Luzardo began the game by retiring 14 of the first 15 batters that he faced, only allowing a single in the first to Bobby Witt Jr. that was erased by a double play to face the minimum through five. He recorded two strikeouts each in the second, third, fourth, and fifth inning for a total of eight heading into the sixth inning. On the offensive side, the Marlins were facing vintage Zack Greinke through the first four innings as they had yet to record a hit before Jesus Sanchez unloaded on a first-pitch curveball to lead off the bottom of the fifth. 103.8 MPH, 26 DEG, 379 FT to the opposite field for his fifth home run of the season. Marlins lead 1-0. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/06/8595d4e9-635822e2-cf38082d-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/c181aad0-d752-4bcc-9452-a63fa2a673a5.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/7085ca50-c01f-4ff5-843d-84c9855b2f8a.mp4Joey Wendle and Jean Segura followed with back-to-back singles and some heads-up baserunning to advance to second and third on an error. Then Nick Fortes grounded a ball to the left side that should've probably resulted in a groundout, but they tried to nab Wendle at third and were unsuccessful, and everyone was safe. Bases loaded, nobody out. Jonathan Davis struck out, then Luis Arraez slashed a single into left to move everyone up 90 feet and extend the lead to 2-0. That would end the night for Zack Greinke. https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/61e426f0-dc3f-4411-83f2-82bf7ee4c75b.mp4Jorge Soler popped out, and then Bryan De La Cruz crushed a bases-clearing double to blow the game wide open and give the Marlins a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/06/39d55386-60178c84-073f6cb7-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4The Royals plated a run in the top of the sixth off Luzardo, but Jesus buckled down and kept them quiet through the seventh inning. And just a day after reading a book about dinosaurs to students from a local school, the Luzardosaurus twirled a seven-inning gem. Following a thrilling comeback victory the night before, the Marlins looked to snatch the series from the Padres as they faced off in a matinee rubber match in Miami. Jesus Luzardo came out with guns blazing, setting down the first nine batters he faced in order with five strikeouts, three coming on his changeup. In the top of the third, he got some help from the other Jesus, who robbed the other Sanchez of a hit with a sliding catch in right field. https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2023/2023-06/01/24f10b45-9e4e7098-cba026e1-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4The offense plated a single run in the bottom of the third without even recording a hit as Jonathan Davis stole second base and went to third on the errant throw after leading off the inning with a walk. Joey Wendle followed with a walk of his own, and both moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice fly to deep left field by Luis Arraez. Marlins lead 1-0. https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/ef119891-4fcf-4483-b643-0ea97c05b013.mp4The game started to unravel for Jesus Luzardo in the top of the fourth. Ha-Seong Kim crushed a leadoff double off the left field wall. He stole third and trotted home on an automatic double by Fernando Tatis Jr. to tie the game at one. Tatis then went to third on a groundout by Xander Bogearts and scored on a sac fly by Brandon Dixon to take the lead. Jesus bounced back from a leadoff solo home run by Gary Sanchez in the fifth with a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout. Things went from bad to worse for Jesus in the top of the sixth. He began the inning by walking Fernando Tatis Jr., striking out Juan Soto, and allowing a double to Xander Bogaerts after Tatis stole second. Jesus Sanchez again provided some help as he deked out Tatis by faking as if he was going to catch the ball that ended up going off the wall, keeping Tatis at second base. https://sporty-clips.mlb.com/8e824fab-38cf-445b-86bd-263db6a7f9c5.mp4That would be the end of the line for Luzardo as Skip came out to bring in the righty, Matt Barnes. And that's when the game really got out of hand. Barnes allowed all six batters he faced to reach base, only recording one out on a fielder's choice by Jose Azocar. He allowed both inherited runners to score, gave up two runs of his own runners, and left an absolute mess for Bryan Hoeing, who came on in relief with the bases loaded, two outs, and Fernando Tatis Jr. at the plate. Two pitches later, the Padres had a 10-1 lead over the Fish after Tatis sent a ball into the left-field corner for a bases-clearing double. Hoeing struck out Juan Soto to mercifully bring the top of the sixth inning to a close. Final Line for Jesus Luzardo: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 1 HB, 93/56 P/S. After the game, Jesus said, "That was an unacceptable performance (for me) to pitch like that." https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/8df8d1e3-6f6d-40b7-a0e2-8edbd7075c96.mp4https://darkroom-clips.mlb.com/ff159b96-4f81-457c-a8ae-1267c54cc20f.mp4And because I had to watch it with my own eyes, here is the final line for Matt Barnes: 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 27/14 P/S. The Marlins had yet to record a hit off of Padres starter Joe Musgrove until Luis Arraez, Jorge Soler, and Bryan De La Cruz led off the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles to load the bases. And just when you thought that the Marlins might have a chance to get back into this game, the ever-present cloud of a possible double play reared its ugly head. Jesus Sanchez grounded into a 1-2-3 double play for the first two outs, and Yuli Gurriel struck out for what some call a NOBLETIGER: No Outs Bases Loaded Ending (with) Team Incapable (of) Getting Easy Run. The rest of the game didn't have much of anything in terms of excitement. Jacob Stallings pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his third pitching appearance of the season, and the Marlins dropped this game by a final score of 10-1. It’s back! With the help of Luis Dorante Jr., who provided us with the full list of walk-up songs to begin the season, we are proud to bring back the Miami Marlins walk-up song playlist. And it's following us to the new site. This article is tailor-made for folks like me who love a good walk-up song. With the Marlins no longer publicly displaying the team’s musical choices (they used to here), Fish On First is putting in the effort to maintain an unofficial playlist. We will try to keep the list as accurate and up-to-date as possible. Feel free to shout at us if you find a mistake! This alphabetized list contains separate sections for pitchers (entrance songs) and position players (walk-up songs). Listen closely the next time one of the bullpen guys has their name announced. Some players have multiple walkup songs. Multiple players have specified start times for their songs. Where not listed, the song starts at 0:00.
