Marlins Video
Following a thrilling comeback victory the night before, the Marlins looked to snatch the series from the Padres as they faced off in a matinee rubber match in Miami.
Jesus Luzardo came out with guns blazing, setting down the first nine batters he faced in order with five strikeouts, three coming on his changeup. In the top of the third, he got some help from the other Jesus, who robbed the other Sanchez of a hit with a sliding catch in right field.
The offense plated a single run in the bottom of the third without even recording a hit as Jonathan Davis stole second base and went to third on the errant throw after leading off the inning with a walk. Joey Wendle followed with a walk of his own, and both moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice fly to deep left field by Luis Arraez. Marlins lead 1-0.
The game started to unravel for Jesus Luzardo in the top of the fourth. Ha-Seong Kim crushed a leadoff double off the left field wall. He stole third and trotted home on an automatic double by Fernando Tatis Jr. to tie the game at one. Tatis then went to third on a groundout by Xander Bogearts and scored on a sac fly by Brandon Dixon to take the lead. Jesus bounced back from a leadoff solo home run by Gary Sanchez in the fifth with a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout.
Things went from bad to worse for Jesus in the top of the sixth. He began the inning by walking Fernando Tatis Jr., striking out Juan Soto, and allowing a double to Xander Bogaerts after Tatis stole second. Jesus Sanchez again provided some help as he deked out Tatis by faking as if he was going to catch the ball that ended up going off the wall, keeping Tatis at second base.
That would be the end of the line for Luzardo as Skip came out to bring in the righty, Matt Barnes. And that's when the game really got out of hand. Barnes allowed all six batters he faced to reach base, only recording one out on a fielder's choice by Jose Azocar. He allowed both inherited runners to score, gave up two runs of his own runners, and left an absolute mess for Bryan Hoeing, who came on in relief with the bases loaded, two outs, and Fernando Tatis Jr. at the plate. Two pitches later, the Padres had a 10-1 lead over the Fish after Tatis sent a ball into the left-field corner for a bases-clearing double. Hoeing struck out Juan Soto to mercifully bring the top of the sixth inning to a close.
Final Line for Jesus Luzardo: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 1 HB, 93/56 P/S.
After the game, Jesus said, "That was an unacceptable performance (for me) to pitch like that."
And because I had to watch it with my own eyes, here is the final line for Matt Barnes: 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 27/14 P/S.
The Marlins had yet to record a hit off of Padres starter Joe Musgrove until Luis Arraez, Jorge Soler, and Bryan De La Cruz led off the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles to load the bases. And just when you thought that the Marlins might have a chance to get back into this game, the ever-present cloud of a possible double play reared its ugly head. Jesus Sanchez grounded into a 1-2-3 double play for the first two outs, and Yuli Gurriel struck out for what some call a NOBLETIGER: No Outs Bases Loaded Ending (with) Team Incapable (of) Getting Easy Run.
The rest of the game didn't have much of anything in terms of excitement. Jacob Stallings pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his third pitching appearance of the season, and the Marlins dropped this game by a final score of 10-1.
