Offishial News for 10/14/24 Through one week of Arizona Fall League action, OF Kemp Alderman (1.768 OPS in 19 PA) has been far and away the most impressive Marlins prospect. He leads the AFL with five home runs, recording at least one in each of the four games he has played in. Alderman's max exit velocity of 116.8 mph would've been the second-highest recorded for a Marlins major league hitter this past season. OF Andrew Pintar has a .329 OPS in 19 PA. INF Jay Beshears has a .384 OPS in 11 PA. LHP Justin King, LHP Patrick Monteverde, RHP Jun-Seok Shim, LHP Justin Storm and RHP Brandon White have each made one appearance, with only White holding his opponents scoreless. You can watch every pitch Shim threw here. His fastball velocity sat in the low 90s, significantly down from where it was last year. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 On Saturday, loanDepot park was the final stop on the Savannah Bananas' 2024 world tour. The baseball entertainers drew a larger crowd than the Marlins have in years. Retired former Marlins Dee Strange-Gordon, Pat Venditte, Juan Pierre, and Aníbal Sánchez each participated. "Banana Ball" comes back to Miami on March 1-2. 🔷 I projected former Marlins closer Tanner Scott to secure a lucrative five-year deal in free agency. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Dodgers routed the Mets to take a 1-0 lead in the NLCS. Jack Flaherty threw seven scoreless innings and the Dodgers pitching staff collectively has thrown 33 straight, which ties an all-time MLB postseason record. The Pohlad family announced that they are exploring a sale of the Twins. They've owned the franchise since 1984, winning two World Series titles, making 12 total postseason appearances and opening a new ballpark during that period. 🔷 Today's MLB postseason schedule: New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, 4:08 p.m. ET (NLCS Game 2) Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Yankees, 7:38 p.m. ET (ALCS Game 1) View full article

Building a Yankees trade package for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Ely Sussman replied to Ely Sussman's topic in Miami Marlins Talk
While that would be fair value, the Yankees simply are not going to move him. They might need him in their lineup this September and they definitely need him for 2025 and beyond. -
Analyzing new details about the 33rd season of Marlins baseball. If you're a Miami Marlins fan, it took only a week or two into the 2024 season for you to start looking ahead to 2025. There is nowhere to go but up from this historically bad campaign. Some aspects of the Marlins regular season schedule were known in advance: Matchups against each of the other 29 teams Home and away series against each National League opponent 13 games against each NL East rival On Thursday afternoon, we got more of the specifics. Run it back vs. the Bucs Just like in 2024, the Marlins will begin next season by hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates for a four-game set. It's only the second time in franchise history that the Marlins are hosting the same opponent on Opening Day in back-to-back years (previously vs. the Chicago Cubs in 1997 and 1998). MLB is giving Miami Opening Day baseball for the ninth time in a 12-year span. The 2024 season-opening starting pitchers were Jesús Luzardo and Mitch Keller. Health permitting, 2025 should feature two legitimate NL Cy Young award candidates: Sandy Alcantara and Paul Skenes. Juiced up Citrus Series From 2022-2024, the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays were limited to four head-to-head meetings (two each at loanDepot park and Tropicana Field). The Fish have been grateful for that because they've been dominated, winning only one Citrus Series game during that period (an Alcantara complete game). These series will be expanded to three games apiece in 2025. The Rays visit the Marlins from May 16-18 as part of MLB's new "Rivalry Week" initiative, then the Fish return the favor from June 6-8. Extended stay in Chicago Shoutout to Fish On First staffer Alex Krutchik for bringing this to my attention. The Marlins visit the Chicago White Sox (May 9-11) and Chicago Cubs (May 12-14) for consecutive series. Assuming they hit the road for that trip immediately after completing their prior homestand on May 7, they could be spending seven straight nights in the same hotel! That is a team travel director's dream. I suppose it's also a dream for any Illinois-based Fish fans. Yankees attendance boost The Marlins perennially have the lowest home attendance in the National League. That was the case in 2023 despite selling 100,001 tickets for their August 11-13 series against the New York Yankees. Next year, it's their turn to host the Bronx Bombers again. Conveniently, the series falls on a weekend during the summer. The August 1-3 dates do not overlap with any significant South Florida basketball, hockey and football events. Even if the Marlins prove to be completely non-competitive, expect an influx of Yankee fans to make it the best-attended series of the season. Scheduled start times for 2025 regular season games won't be confirmed until much later. For reference, in 2024, Marlins Monday-Thursday home night games have been at 6:40 p.m., Fridays have been at 7:10 p.m., Saturdays have typically been at 4:10 p.m. and Sundays have typically been at 1:40 p.m. Also, a reminder that due to humidity, the loanDepot park retractable roof stays closed with the exception of some March/April and September games. The Yankees need to add lineup depth to avoid missing out on the postseason for a second straight year, and they have more than enough prospect capital to make the Fish a competitive offer for Chisholm. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is one of the biggest names who could potentially be dealt in advance of the July 30 MLB trade deadline. Chisholm's combination of tools, youth, club control and 2024 production make him a potential target for many teams and easily the most valuable trade chip on the Miami Marlins active roster. Should the Marlins be shopping Chisholm or building around him? You could make strong arguments both ways, but like it or not, the team's intentions are clear: they're focused on infusing more young talent into their farm system with the target of contending several years down the road. Investing in the current major league roster is not a priority. If the Fish receive a fair offer for their Bahamian star, he will be on the move. Leading up to the deadline, I'll be proposing hypothetical trades that the Marlins could make involving Chisholm. The series begins with the New York Yankees. How Chisholm fits in New York On July 11, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees have held internal discussions about Chisholm. "The extent of the interest is unknown," Heyman adds, "but Chisholm likely would play mostly infield, a Yankees need." The Marlins have used Chisholm exclusively in center field since the start of 2023. The Yankees have mainly put Aaron Judge there with Trent Grisham taking over whenever Judge rests or serves as designated hitter. With full-time DH Giancarlo Stanton projected to return from the injured list by the deadline, their outfield will get even more crowded, hence the presumed move back to the dirt. Second base is Chisholm's best defensive position, and this season, he has thoroughly outplayed current Yankees 2B Gleyber Torres. A Chisholm acquisition could mean parting ways with Torres in a corresponding move (he's a pending free agent) or transitioning him to third base. True to their moniker, the Bombers rank second in Major League Baseball with 134 home runs this season. However, they are second-to-last with 38 stolen bases. Chisholm has swiped nearly half as many bags by himself! As exceptional as Juan Soto and Judge are, they aren't capable of hitting homers every game. Adding Chisholm to their squad ought to make their offense more consistent because of the new opportunities to drive in runs via singles and productive outs. Aside from an early-season Anthony Volpe hot streak, the Yankees have gotten awful output from their leadoff hitters in 2024. Chisholm and his 107 wRC+ would be a significant upgrade. Earning a measly $2.625M salary, Chisholm still has two more years of arbitration eligibility beyond this season. While the Yankees aim to keep Soto on a long-term deal, having Chisholm around would soften the blow of potentially getting outbid in free agency. There is also the intangible piece of this. Jazz relishes being a celebrity. The New York lifestyle suits him perfectly, especially considering he would not carry the burden of being the team's leader or top player. Even if the Yankees crumble down the stretch, he won't be villainized for it. Those circumstances could bring out the best in him on the field. Scott as a sweetener It's easier said than done, but the Marlins will attempt to package multiple big leaguers in the same deal to get premium prospects in return. As appealing as Chisholm is on his own, the Yankees are reportedly pursuing Tanner Scott as well. As I have previously written and spoken about, rental relievers like Scott are particularly valuable to teams like the Yankees, who have 96.8% playoff odds as of this writing, per FanGraphs. Relievers can have an outsized impact in October due to frequent off days. Teams with extreme confidence in themselves to make the postseason should be willing to trade more talent for them than those on the fringes of the race. Scott's numbers have been extraordinary over the last two years. He is unfazed by platoon splits, home/road environments, days of rest, etc. His FIP in 2024 is inflated by an April slump—there's been ample evidence since then that his control is sharper than ever. Meanwhile, the Yankees don't have a reliable, high-leverage lefty of any kind. Regardless of whether or not he'd be their full-time closer, the Bronx is an ideal landing spot for Scott. Trade proposal Yankees receive OF/INF Jazz Chisholm Jr. and LHP Tanner Scott Marlins receive OF Spencer Jones, INF Oswald Peraza and C/1B Engelth Ureña They could not be more different in terms of physique and baseball background, but similar to Chisholm, acquiring Spencer Jones is betting on his loud tools. Jones is Baseball America's second-ranked Yankees prospect behind only Jasson Dominguez (73rd overall on BA's Top 100 prospects list). The 6'6" left-handed hitter possesses above-average speed and plus power. Jones has spent this whole season at Double-A, slashing .237/.317/.403 (103 wRC+) with 10 homers and 18 steals in 73 games while roaming center field. QnZycWJfV0ZRVkV3dEdEUT09X0JRVlVCd0VGQUZFQURGVlFYZ0FBQ1FKVkFGa0ZVMUlBQzFJRFVRY0FCd0JWQWdRRQ==.mp4 Z0dnbDNfV0ZRVkV3dEdEUT09X1VGZFVVMUlGVVZRQVhsUUxBQUFBQkFJREFBQUdCbGdBVVZRQUJRRUhWUUlHVkFzSA==.mp4 Jones' 37.1% strikeout rate is worrisome after being in the high-20s last year. Then again, he would be untouchable right now if not for that setback. Even with that in mind, the 23-year-old would instantly take over as the top position player in the Marlins farm system. A former Top 100 prospect himself, Oswald Peraza flunked his audition at the big league level last summer (53 wRC+, -0.4 fWAR in 52 G) and he's continuing to struggle with the stick at Triple-A this season. As desperate as the Yankees are for infield reinforcements, Peraza was passed over for a call-up yet again on Friday. He's a non-factor for them in 2024 and clogging up a 40-man roster spot. So yeah, this is a classic example of buying low. Xavier Edwards is temporarily handling shortstop duties in Miami, though it's only a matter of time before the club concedes that he's a second baseman moving forward. There is still a void at that premium position. Peraza is an intriguing reclamation project who would get the opportunity to compete for SS reps next spring. Ranked 26th in the Yankees system by BA, Engelth Ureña played only 11 minor league games through his first two professional seasons. Finally healthy in 2024, he has decimated the Florida Complex League (.294/.407/.559, 153 wRC+) with just as many walks as strikeouts. I listed Peraza before Ureña simply due to name recognition. This 19-year-old Dominican (turning 20 next month) is the true No. 2 piece of the package coming to the Fish. He'd begin the 2025 campaign with Low-A Jupiter. Offishial News for 7/12/24 On Thursday, making a rare start at DH, Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the second time in this series (12th time this season). Roddery Muñoz pitched a career-high 6 ⅔ innings. He was not particularly good, though neither was the defense behind him. Vidal Bruján continues to steadily fade offensively. It's been nearly two months since his last multi-hit game and his on-base percentage has dipped below .300. The Astros won, 6-3. It's the eighth series sweep that the Marlins have suffered in 2024. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 3-1. RHP Valente Bellozo, RHP Luarbert Arias and RHP Emmanuel Ramirez combined to allow only three hits. Double-A Pensacola won, 10-8. A much-needed productive night for LF Nathan Martorella (2-5, 2B, HR). High-A Beloit lost, 4-2. Low-A Jupiter won, 7-3. This was my first time watching a complete start from RHP Eliazar Dishmey and I came away very impressed. Dishmey's secondary pitches still need a lot of refinement, but his fastball alone can carry him up the minor league ladder with its combination of command, velocity and ride. DSL Marlins lost, 10-3. DSL Miami won, 4-3. OF Jancory De La Cruz is slashing .471/.591/1.118 in July to overcome a slow start to his season. 🔷 The Yankees have had internal discussions about pursuing Chisholm, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Yankees second basemen have slashed .224/.296/.336 this season, so that's where he would most likely be plugged in. The combined slash line of their leadoff hitters is similarly mediocre. Also, the team only recently snapped a month-long stolen base drought. Batting leadoff for the New York Yankees: Jazz Chisholm Jr.?

Hector Rodriguez's draft board As detailed here, Fish On First draft analyst Hector Rodriguez recommends that the Marlins target the following players with the No. 16 overall pick: Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State Christian Moore, 2B, Tennessee James Tibbs III, OF, Florida State Vance Honeycutt, OF, North Carolina Walker Janek, C, Sam Houston State Mock drafts These will be frequently updated between now and Sunday night... Baseball America (Carlos Collazo): Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State Essentially all of the college hitters who are tied to Seattle are also tied to the Marlins. Smith, Seaver King, Caleb Lomavita and Ryan Waldschmidt all seem to make a lot of sense. Dart throw names for later picks: 1B Blake Burke, OF Dylan Dreiling, OF Griffin Burkholder MLB Pipeline (Jim Callis): Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State If Tibbs and Christian Moore are gone, the Marlins likely would turn to Smith over King. MLB Pipeline (Jonathan Mayo): Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State This continues to feel like the best landing spot for the third baseman, though the Marlins are also looking at other college hitters like Benge and Ryan Waldschmidt. Sloan could enter the equation if they switch gears to the mound. ESPN (Kiley McDaniel): Seaver King, SS, Wake Forest I think the Marlins are looking for a college bat here with King being the last one left. Carter Johnson (or possibly PJ Morlando) are rumored underslot options here if they don't like what's left. FanGraphs (Eric Longenhagen): Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State This would be a great value pick at this spot, and unlike a lot of other “safe” college hitters, Smith has some swing optimization stuff to work on. His timeline also fits better with the Marlins’ window of contention than the super polished college bats. The Athletic (Keith Law): Seaver King, SS, Wake Forest I’ve heard the Marlins mostly with college bats, including King, Cam Smith and Tibbs, although supposedly they have at least one high school hitter in their mix (maybe Theo Gillen). Just Baseball (Aram Leighton): Seaver King, SS, Wake Forest Big tools with the ability to play all over the diamond, King proved that he can handle ACC pitching after transferring from Division II Wingate. An organization desperate for reinforcement up the middle would likely be thrilled to nab King and would probably give him every opportunity to prove he can stick at shortstop. CBS Sports (R.J. Anderson & Mike Axisa): Cam Smith, 3B, Florida State All signs point to the new front office regime in Miami grabbing a college bat here. Smith offers tremendous power but will need to fine tune his swing and approach to fully tap into it. Others like Oklahoma State's Carson Benge, Wake Forest's Seaver King, and Kentucky's Ryan Waldschmidt make sense here as well. View full article

Offishial News for 7/11/24 On Wednesday, RHP Bryan Hoeing (3.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 62 pitches/39 strikes) didn't give the Marlins much of a chance to compete. Might not see him start another game for the near future. Dane Myers recorded his sixth outfield assist and Xavier Edwards had multiple hits from the right side of the plate, which he had never done before in the majors. Framber Valdez tossed seven excellent innings with 10 strikeouts, typical of what left-handers have done to Miami's offense throughout the season. The Marlins lost, 9-1. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 10-5. RHP Evan Fitterer lasted just 3 ⅓ innings, allowing six earned runs. OF Griffin Conine hit his 17th home run of the season. C/INF Bennett Hostetler went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in his Triple-A debut. Double-A Pensacola won, 6-3. High-A Beloit won, 3-1. LHP Emmett Olson (6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 90 pitches/54 strikes) made his longest start as a pro. Low-A Jupiter lost, 14-8. OF Kemp Alderman homered for the second straight day. FCL Marlins won, 3-2. OF Andrés Valor and OF Yoffry Solano each had three-hit days. The team clinched the FCL East division title Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 Still four more Marlins games to go until the All-Star break, but I'd make the case that they've never had a more miserable first half to a season. It's the first time that the franchise has suffered 60 losses before the break. The only player on the entire team who's been both healthy and significantly above average in his role is Tanner Scott, who is practically guaranteed to get traded by the end of the month. Two intriguing comeback candidates, Tim Anderson and Sixto Sánchez, both flopped. No notable prospects have made their major league debuts. Nowhere to go but up...right? 🔷 Left-hander Devin Smeltzer was released. He pitched 117 ⅔ innings with Triple-A Jacksonville over the last two seasons, posting a 5.66 ERA and 6.45 FIP, though he also threw a seven-inning no-hitter (the first in Jumbo Shrimp history). At the insistence of Mel Stottlemyre Jr., Smeltzer lowered his arm slot entering 2024 and had initial success as a reliever in Jacksonville. Opponents have gradually adjusted, leading the Marlins to part ways with the 28-year-old. 🔷 Sean McCormack shares his MLB mock draft through the first 39 picks, which includes the Marlins taking Oklahoma State's Carson Benge at No. 16 overall. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Wander Franco has been moved from administrative leave to the restricted list as he faces formal charges of sexual abuse against a minor, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking in the Dominican Republic. He could serve up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, and safe to say, he'll never play in Major League Baseball again. Jake Eder was called up by the White Sox as their 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader, though he didn't make an appearance. The 2020 Marlins draft pick was regarded as one of the organization's top prospects when he was traded last summer in exchange for Jake Burger. The Phillies became the first MLB team to reach 60 wins. The full Home Run Derby field is set following the commitments of Adolis García, Teoscar Hernández and Marcell Ozuna. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Roddery Muñoz) conclude their series against the Astros (RHP Jake Bloss). The Marlins have a 35.4% chance to avoid getting swept, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 8:10 p.m. ET. 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Gwinnett, 7:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola at Rocket City, 7:35 p.m. ET High-A Beloit vs. Cedar Rapids, 7:35 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Bradenton, 6:30 p.m. ET DSL Marlins at DSL Rangers Red, 11:00 a.m. ET DSL Miami vs. DSL Rangers Blue, 11:00 a.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes View full article

Offishial News for 7/10/24 On Tuesday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. cranked a leadoff home run and later stole a base to set up another run. It was the 12th time in his career that he's done both in the same game. Trevor Rogers set a career high with 107 pitches across 5 ⅓ solid innings. The Astros pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning on Alex Bregman's two-out, two-run home run. The Marlins lost, 4-3. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 3-2. The Gwinnett Stripers were one strike away from defeat when old friend Yuli Gurriel changed the result with a walk-off, two-run single. RHP Max Meyer (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 72 pitches/55 strikes) had his longest minor league outing of the season (more on him below). Double-A Pensacola won, 6-4. The Blue Wahoos scored all their runs in the eighth and ninth innings. 3B Jacob Berry provided the game-winning hit. High-A Beloit won, 5-3. C Sam Praytor has quietly reached base in 17 consecutive games. Low-A Jupiter lost, 6-3. OF Kemp Alderman had his first home run of 2024. FCL Marlins won, 5-4. OF Andrés Valor went 3-for-5 with two triples and 3 RBI. That raised Valor's batting average above .300 for the first time this season. The DSL Marlins and DSL Miami games were both suspended due to rain midway through. Nate Karzmer recapped the previous week's MiLB action. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 The Marlins signed right-hander Adam Oller to a minor league deal and he's expected to report to Triple-A Jacksonville. Throughout his professional career, the 29-year-old has oscillated between starting and relieving, including this season with Triple-A Columbus (Guardians affiliate). In 28 MLB appearances (15 starts) with the Athletics from 2022-2023, he owns a discouraging 7.09 ERA and 6.65 FIP. 🔷 Matt Andriese cleared waivers and was outrighted to Jacksonville. 🔷 "Chisholm is going to get traded," Ken Rosenthal predicted on Foul Territory. "I don't think there's much question about that. The only question is which team." While I also see that as the likely scenario, the Marlins still need to get suitable offers to follow through on that. Beginning on Thursday and continuing every weekday up to the MLB trade deadline, I'll be crafting a series of proposals from potential Jazz suitors. 🔷 Max Meyer is finally stretching out in anticipation of becoming an MLB starter again. After previously being capped at four innings per appearance throughout his first two months in the minors, Meyer has exceeded that in back-to-back-to-back starts. The Jumbo Shrimp have also given him reps on five days' rest when possible to simulate the major league routine, rather than waiting a full week between starts to manage his workload. July 21 is the magic date. If recalled on the 21st or later, Meyer will finish the season with less than one year and 172 days of MLB service time, delaying his free agent eligibility until after the 2029 season. Expect one more Triple-A tune-up for Meyer, maybe two so that the Marlins don't make their intentions so blatantly obvious. 🔷 Baseball America updated their Marlins Top 30 prospects list. The biggest risers from their previous list in May were C Joe Mack (No. 27 ➡️data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw== No. 8), RHP Roddery Muñoz (unranked ➡️ No. 11), LHP Keyner Benitez (unranked ➡️data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw== No. 15) and C Ryan Ignoffo (unranked ➡️ No. 17). The biggest fallers were OF/INF Jacob Berry and OF John Cruz, who are now unranked after previously being No. 13 and No. 15, respectively. A heads up that the Fish On First Top 30 will be updated next week to incorporate new MLB Draft picks. 🔷 Kevin Barral checks in on the professional progress that every member of the 2023 MLB Draft class has made. 🔷 Nearly half of the respondents to our latest Fish On First Twitter poll expect Xavier Edwards to finish this season with a batting average between .275 and .299. Entering Wednesday, he's at .278. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Reds outfielder Rece Hinds set a major league record, piling up five extra-base hits in his first two career games. Hinds came a single shy of the cycle on Tuesday. The Giants took down the Blue Jays on a walk-off wild pitch. The Rangers extended their winning streak to five games. Though still below .500, they don't seem likely to be trade deadline sellers anymore. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber returned from their minimum-length IL stints as the Phillies crushed the Dodgers, 10-1. The Mets acquired reliever Phil Maton from the Rays for cash considerations. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Bryan Hoeing) continue their series against the Astros (LHP Framber Valdez). Miami's bullpen will be heavily involved as Hoeing has not exceeded 59 pitches in any outing this season. The Marlins have a 31,8% chance to win, per FanGraphs. First pitch at 8:10 p.m. ET 🔷 Today's MiLB schedule: Triple-A Jacksonville at Gwinnett, 12:05 p.m. ET Double-A Pensacola at Rocket City, 7:35 p.m. ET High-A Beloit vs. Cedar Rapids, 7:35 p.m. ET Low-A Jupiter at Bradenton, 11:00 a.m. ET FCL Marlins at FCL Astros, 12:00 p.m. ET Marlins podcast episodes View full article

Offishial News for 7/9/24 On Monday down on the farm, FCL Marlins won, 12-5. Seven more stolen bases for the squad, including three for OF Andrés Valor, who's up to 32 SB this season. He has 16 SB in his last 10 games! I cannot remember seeing a stretch like that in pro ball. DSL Marlins lost, 4-3. DSL Miami won, 12-6. Huge performance from OF Jancory De La Cruz (3-4 HR, 4 R). RHP Eliazar Dishmey was named Florida State Pitcher of the Week. Here's more Marlins news and content: 🔷 Craig Mish reports on a handful of Marlins players drawing trade interest from contending teams. Aligning with recent national rumors, Mish hears that there is a "growing belief" Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be moved this month. 🔷 Kevin Barral examines what makes Chisholm an appealing trade candidate as well as the concerns his suitors may have. 🔷 Declan Cronin continues to pitch well, but has been betrayed by the defense behind him, Alex Carver explains. 🔷 On this day in 1999, Liván Hernández recorded his final Marlins win. He was traded to the Giants two weeks later. 🔷 Peter Troy's athletic catch on April 2 has made him a candidate for the 2024 MLB All‑Star Ball Crew. MLB.com's Christina De Nicola shares his background story. This is the final day to support him! You can cast unlimited votes for Troy here. 🔷 Speaking of bat boys...In 2005, Marlins bat boy Nick Cirillo went the equivalent of viral when the team suspended him and did not bring him back. Cirillo accepted a $500 wager from visiting Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny to drink a gallon of milk in less than an hour. He succeeded, but vomited afterward. Nearly 19 years later, Cirillo confronted his former boss, David Samson, on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, Diamondbacks Yilber Díaz (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 83 pitches/53 strikes) was excellent in his major league debut, though he had to settle for a no-decision when Sean Murphy's two-strike, two-out, two-run home run sent the game into extra innings. The Braves won for the 50th time this season. Twins rookie Brooks Lee had the go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning. Lee is slashing .458/.462/.625 through his first six MLB games. 🔷 Today's MLB game: The Marlins (probable starter LHP Trevor Rogers) have their series opener against the Astros. Would you believe that the Marlins have won six of their last seven regular season games at Minute Maid Park? The Marlins have a 39.9% chance to win, per FanGraphs (they're projection RHP Ronel Blanco to start for Houston). First pitch at 8:10 p.m. ET. 🔷 Join us for a new episode of Fish On First LIVE tonight from 7:00-8:00 p.m. ET on YouTube/Twitter/Facebook. Special guests: @Chad Turner and Spencer Morris. What a difference one year can make. The Miami Marlins were buyers at the 2023 trade deadline, taking on veteran salaries and parting with prospects to optimize their postseason chances. With the 2024 deadline approaching at the end of this month, they are "clear sellers," as Craig Mish detailed for the Miami Herald on Monday morning. "The club is expected to move multiple players on or before the deadline," Mish adds, with the assumption being that Miami seeks prospects in return. This will be Peter Bendix's first deadline as Marlins president of baseball operations. Perhaps it seems obvious that he would be surveying every MLB team for the best possible trade return, but Mish reports that he has brought a slight change of philosophy to the front office. "Miami under Bendix is open for business to everyone. Former GM Kim Ng was more restrictive on making trades to help some clubs in the NL East." It's a bizarre nugget considering Ng, during her first year with the Fish, dealt Adam Duvall to the Atlanta Braves to plug a hole in their outfield. Duvall played practically every day for Atlanta down the stretch en route to the 2021 World Series title. She also made a significant deal with the New York Mets last July to acquire David Robertson, though that came at the expense of two prospects (Marco Vargas and Ronald Hernández) who were several years away from even sniffing the major leagues. The Braves are once again poised to be deadline buyers, as are the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets sit at .500 and could go either way, while the Washington Nationals (42-48) will probably sell. View full rumor

Offishial news for 7/8/24 On Sunday, Edward Cabrera (3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 82 pitches/47 strikes) returned from a two-month injured list stint. He averaged nearly five pitches per plate appearance, limiting walks, but allowing plenty of hard contact to the White Sox. The Marlins once trailed 4-1, but score six unanswered runs from there, including four after being down to their final out. Josh Bell broke out of a 0-for-23 slump with a game-tying double. Then, Jake Burger devastated his former team with a three-run walk-off home run. The Marlins won, 7-4.
