  7. On this day in 2024, the Miami Marlins claimed Otto Lopez off of waivers from the San Francisco Giants. That date could prove very significant in franchise history if Lopez continues what he's been doing through his first 124 games with the Fish. Initially viewed as a utility player, the Dominican right-handed hitter has settled in as the club's everyday second baseman. Since the start of last season, Lopez leads all Marlins players with 3.0 fWAR, slashing .275/.320/.389 with eight home runs, 21 stolen bases and great defense. In the estimation of Baseball Trade Values, he has gone from having zero trade value to roughly the same as Marlins top prospects Noble Meyer and Dillon Head (even that feels like a conservative estimate, in my opinion). Nearly a year and a half into the Peter Bendix era, claiming Lopez and acquiring Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers for Trevor Rogers stand out as the most lopsided transactions in the Marlins' favor. Down on the farm on Thursday, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 5-1. Every Jumbo Shrimp position player recorded at least one hit. Meanwhile, Janson Junk, Austin Roberts and Christian Roa combined to allow only three total hits to Worcester. 9. It is only natural for Miami Marlins fans to be envious. Since Opening Day, they've seen the Arizona Diamondbacks (Ketel Marte and Brandon Pfaadt), Boston Red Sox (Garrett Crochet and Kristian Campbell) and San Diego Padres (Jackson Merrill) announce contract extensions that will retain key players into the 2030s, not to mention the handful of similar deals that were completed across the league during spring training. Meanwhile in Miami, the only constant is change. In early 2024, Luis Arraez and Jesús Luzardo were both transparent about their desire to stay with the club for many years—the Marlins traded them later that year. Pablo López signed an extension shortly after being dealt to the Minnesota Twins in 2023, as did Miguel Rojas upon joining the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peter Bendix has not extended any player since being hired as president of baseball operations. Neither did Kim Ng during the second half of her tenure as general manager. The most recent Marlin to agree to an extension was reliever Richard Bleier—that forgettable two-year, $6 million pact was announced more than three years ago (March 22, 2022). In the meantime, 27 of the 30 MLB teams have extended at least one of their own guys, according to MLB Trade Rumors. The only exceptions to that have been the Marlins, Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees. (Although it was a free agent deal rather than an extension, the Yankees kept the face of their franchise, Aaron Judge, and subsequently named him team captain.) Why are extensions important? Well, prior to Bleier, the Marlins locked up Sandy Alcantara in November 2021. That shrewd five-year, $56 million deal is the only reason he's still in Miami right now. Had they waited until after his subsequent Cy Young award-winning season to negotiate, Alcantara would have had the leverage to ask for more guaranteed money than the franchise was comfortable committing to an individual pitcher. Without an extension, he was on track to reach free agency following the 2024 season; instead, he's under club control through 2027. 1j25vg.mp4 Low-revenue teams like the Marlins should be utilizing extensions even more than average teams because they will inevitably be priced out of premium free agents. They need to roll the dice on young players before their potential is fully realized in order to eventually contend on a tight budget (their payroll is the lowest in the majors entering 2025). The most logical extension candidates for any club are up-the-middle position players. Catcher Joe Mack had a breakout season at Double-A in 2024, excelling both offensively and defensively against much older competition. If this year mirrors that one, Mack deserves consideration for a pre-debut extension entering 2026. In the meantime, shortstop Xavier Edwards and second baseman Otto Lopez are top of mind. Both have valuable skill sets, but ones that typically don't pay well in arbitration—Edwards has never and will never hit for power, while Lopez is a standout defender. They are two seasons away from even becoming arb-eligible, so the Marlins wouldn't have to break the bank. Current Triple-A Jacksonville catcher Agustín Ramírez is a fascinating case. He will inevitably move off of the position, especially if Mack pans out, but his potential with the bat is immense. Poised to debut by the midpoint of 2025, perhaps a positive first impression compels the the front office to sign him next winter. No player in the Marlins organization has a higher ceiling than Eury Pérez. I'm very skeptical about him being a realistic extension candidate because of his combination of youth and pure stuff. Due to hit free agency as a 26-year-old, he is practically assured of getting a massive contract even if he pitches sparingly between now and then. The Marlins should make an attempt, nonetheless.

  12. For the first time since his rookie season, Sandy Alcantara made a start where his four-seam fastball averaged less than 96 miles per hour. His results were solid despite that, but it led to a quick hook for the Miami Marlins ace, who threw just 70 pitches on Tuesday night. After the game, Alcantara admitted to feeling "tired" and took pride in how he battled through it. Kyle Stowers homered to give the Marlins an early lead and Graham Pauley doubled to put them ahead for good in a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets. Down on the farm, Triple-A Jacksonville won, 10-5. Edward Cabrera (right middle finger blister) made his first rehab start with them (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 46 pitches/27 strikes). That modest workload suggests he will be making at least two more starts—one on Sunday and another next week—before the Marlins consider reincorporating him into their big league rotation. Maximo Acosta, Heriberto Hernández and Troy Johnston each homered in what was the Jumbo Shrimp's home opener. Every starting position player reached base safely. The full interview is posted here. 🔷 The official Marlins Opening Day payroll as calculated by the MLB labor relations department was $67,412,619, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, easily the lowest total in the majors. Last year at this time, their payroll was $97.2 million. 🔷 The updated FanGraphs MLB top prospects list from Eric Longenhagen includes five Marlins: Agustín Ramírez (40th), Thomas White (55th), Joe Mack (65th), Starlyn Caba (94th) and Noble Meyer (105th). Longenhagen assigns each of them a future value of 50. Also from FanGraphs, Jon Becker confirms that the Marlins had the youngest Opening Day roster in the majors (average age of 27.5 years) and the one with the most former waiver claims (seven). 🔷 Aram Leighton of Just Baseball highlighted Maximo Acosta as one of his 2025 prospect breakout candidates. Off to a good start! 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, 2024 NL Rookie of the Year runner-up Jackson Merrill and the San Diego Padres have agreed on a nine-year, $135 million contract extension. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up, Colton Cowser, will miss a minimum of 6-8 weeks due to a fractured left thumb. Lance Lynn has retired after 13 MLB seasons. Lynn was a two-time All-Star who began and ended his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, playing for five other teams in between those stints. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Connor Gillispie) conclude their series against the Mets (RHP Clay Holmes). 13. Today's news roundup also includes comments from Sandy Alcantara about pitching through fatigue and another emerging MLB star inking a huge contract extension. 14. It's amazing how much his value has gone up only a year after being placed on waivers. There is little doubt in my mind that he is a serviceable everyday player moving forward. The main question is how much power he'll provide. After not showing much last season, hitting one so deep to the opposite field last night is very intriguing.
  15. It has looked like a combo of both. Majority of the Pirates steals were uncontested because of neglectful pitchers. There were two attempts I remember when Fortes was to blame for failing to execute the throw (one was short of the bag and the other way too far to the first base side). Good job by Fortes on Sunday, though. Got a standard caught stealing and threw out another guy that didn't count as a CS only because it was a potential wild pitch.
  16. That's a good one to keep in mind. If McKeon is getting inducted in large part because of 2003, Beckett has a case for himself. Might be the best individual performance that we'll ever see by a Marlin across a single playoff run.
  17. Maybe! But I remember a similar sentiment going the other way at this time a year ago. Got swept by a seemingly inferior Pirates team to begin the season, then had a very favorable matchup vs. the Angels after that to "get right." I could see a scenario where the non-Sotos in the Mets lineup are stuck in an uncharacteristic slump for a bit longer, regardless of who they're facing.
  18. Player stats from the first weekend of Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball. They're off today and begin their first full-length series tomorrow.
  19. Today's news roundup also includes the first in-season Marlins roster maneuvers. This year's NCAA men's basketball tournament has been as chalky as any in recent memory, with the Final Four being comprised of the No. 1 seeds from each region. How lame! Inexplicable hot streaks make sports much more compelling. At least in Major League Baseball, we're witnessing one of those "Cinderella" runs from the Miami Marlins. Widely projected to be non-competitive in 2025 (even before getting inundated by injuries in spring training), the Marlins are 3-1. Each of their victories have come in walk-off fashion, the latest being on a wild pitch. A bullpen built primarily with former waiver claims was terrific against the Pittsburgh Pirates, helped by a handful of highlights from the outfield defense. It is Miami's best five-game start to a season since 2020. Will there be one more unlikely win tonight before April begins, or could this continue even after the calendar flips? More Marlins news and content below: 🔷 The Marlins now have nine players on the major league injured list. Jesús Tinoco suffered a left low back strain. Right-hander Luarbert Arias was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. One of my 2025 Call-Up Contest picks, Arias will likely make his MLB debut during the upcoming series whenever a low-leverage situation presents itself (there weren't many of those against the Pirates). 🔷 Another fresh arm, Xzavion Curry, joined the pitching staff on Sunday at the expense of Valente Bellozo. Barring injury to another Marlins pitcher, Bellozo won't be eligible to be brought back up to the majors until April 14. 🔷 Seth Martinez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville, so he'll stick around the organization as bullpen depth. 🔷 The Marlins released 14 prospects to comply with Major League Baseball's roster limits. I was most surprised to see outfielder Jake DeLeo on the list—he was their sixth-round draft pick in 2023. Also in minor league news, former Marlins Top 30 prospect José Gerardo is being converted from an outfielder to a pitcher. Gerardo always had terrific raw power, but he struck out in 38.9% of his career plate appearances in rookie ball. 🔷 I was one of the few people who collected points during the first Prediction Time of the 2025 season. Understandably, there was widespread pessimism considering how the Marlins stumbled out of the starting gate last year. 🔷 Prep right-hander Seth Hernandez is next up in Hector Rodriguez's series of 2025 MLB Draft prospect profiles. 🔷 If David Weathers hadn't suffered an injury on a bunt attempt, Mike Ferguson wonders whether he would have completed the first no-hitter in Marlins history. 🔷 Elsewhere around baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals remain undefeated. The Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins—all of whom finished above .500 in 2024—are winless. The Yankees tied an all-time major league record by homering 15 times in their first three games. Several of their players have been utilizing customized bats that current Marlins field coordinator Aaron Leanhardt helped create during his tenure with the club. 🔷 Today's MLB game: the Marlins (probable starter RHP Cal Quantrill) host the New York Mets (LHP David Peterson). With this being the third straight lefty that the Marlins are facing, it will be a test of how strict the new coaching staff is about platooning. They have a 39.0% chance to win, per FanGraphs.
