Miami Marlins left-hander Dax Fulton will be undergoing UCL surgery on his left elbow, likely ending the pitcher's 2023 season, Craig Mish and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald report.
Fulton had Tommy John surgery in high school, which factored into why he fell to the Marlins in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He boosted his prospect stock in 2022 by leading all Marlins minor leaguers with 150 strikeouts while facing significantly older competition and showing a lot of starter traits. Entering his age-21 season this year, Fulton earned an invitation to big league spring training. He ranked second on our recently updated Fish On First Top 30 prospects list (behind only Eury Pérez).

But Fulton was inconsistent for the Blue Wahoos in 2023 (33.0 IP, 5.18 ERA, 4.66 FIP in 7 G/6 GS). He had been sidelined for the past month while the Marlins sought medical opinions on what to do next, ultimately determining that a second Tommy John wasn't necessary.
The Marlins used all six of their 2020 draft picks on pitchers. Two of them, right-handers Kyle Nicolas and Kyle Hurt, were traded in packages to acquire Jacob Stallings and Dylan Floro, respectively. The others have been slowed by injuries—Fulton, Max Meyer, Zach McCambley and Jake Eder have combined to pitch only 41 MiLB innings this year (with Meyer doubtful to return to the mound until 2024).
Fish On First wishes Fulton a speedy and complete recovery.
