Marlins Video
The rumors that get out to the public during MLB trade deadline season are just the tip of the iceberg. Every "source" has their own motivations for sharing names with the media, while some of the juiciest negotiations never see the light of your Twitter feed until the deals have been finalized. The Miami Marlins' acquisitions of relief pitchers David Robertson and especially Jorge López seemingly came out of nowhere, for example.
Nonetheless, there's value in aggregating the industry's reporting to get a sense of how the Marlins are aiming to modify their roster leading up to Tuesday's deadline. Even the targets that they don't acquire now could be revisited during the 2023-24 offseason and beyond.
Definitely Available
INF Tim Anderson (Chicago White Sox) via Jesse Rogers, ESPN
- 2023 pre-deadline stats: .245/.286/.293, 60 wRC+, 1 HR, 10 SB, -0.5 fWAR in 82 G (age-30 season)
- $12.5M salary this season with $14M club option for 2024 ($1M buyout)
- Projected asking price should be comparable to Nicky López (traded by Royals to Braves for LHP Taylor Hearn)
- Additional notes: Anderson finally found his offensive groove in the first 15 games coming out of the All-Star break (.344/.403/.426 in 67 PA).

- $9.95M salary this season under club control through 2024 via arbitration
- According to Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media: "The Marlins have been pushing hard for Torres, but the Yankees’ asking price has been too steep for their liking—two 25-year-old starting pitchers, right-hander Edward Cabrera and lefty Braxton Garrett, plus two prospects."
- Additional notes: The Marlins and Yankees reportedly had negotiations involving Torres and Pablo López prior to the 2022 deadline.
Traded Elsewhere
3B Jeimer Candelario (formerly of Washington Nationals) via
- 2023 stats with Nationals: .258/.341/.481, 121 wRC+, 16 HR, 6 SB, 3.1 fWAR in 99 G (age-29 season)
- Pending free agent with $5M salary this season
- Traded to Cubs on July 31
1B Carlos Santana (formerly of Pittsburgh Pirates) via Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic
- 2023 stats with Pirates: .235/.321/.412, 99 wRC+, 12 HR, 6 SB, 1.0 fWAR in 94 G (age-37 season)
- Pending free agent with $6.75M salary this season
- Traded to Brewers on July 27
- Additional notes: Would've been a bizarre fit considering the Marlins have rostered two other first basemen throughout the season, Garrett Cooper and Yuli Gurriel. Santana has started exclusively at 1B/DH since 2018. Were the Marlins prepared to trade Cooper or Gurriel in a corresponding move, or perhaps use Gurriel at third base down the stretch?

- Other teams that had reported interest: Astros, Yankees
