Clayton was the University of Washington's starting shortstop throughout each of the last three seasons. His bat regressed slightly from 2023 (.938 OPS) to 2024 (.818 OPS), and he didn't do himself any favors during the MLB Draft League, striking out in 51.8% of his plate appearances. However, he is the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

"He's just there to compete and to be the best player he can," Williams says, "and I really think that speaks volumes for a team that I think needed his leadership and presence in the middle of that order and that most premier defensive position on the field."
